SQU Gets Patent for Wireless charging System for Mobile Phones

Sultan Qaboos University has been granted its fourth patent registered in the US Patent Office for the invention of a completely mobile, multi-element wireless charging system for mobile phones and other electronic devices developed by Dr. Mohammed M. Bait-Suwailam, Assistant Professor, Department Electrical and Computer Engineering, College of Engineering. In this device, the transmitting module powers up from a DC battery, thus eliminates the use of AC power adapters, which needs the system to be connected through cables to the main outlet supply. The cables do sometimes give rise to possible electromagnetic interference issues as they may give rise to radiation depending on their size and operating frequency. This device supports the use of small solar panels that could also be employed to harvest solar energy and then to be used as electrical energy supply.
Dr. Mohammed M. Bait-Suwailam said that the transmitter deploys a built-in oscillator circuitry to generate an AC signal from the DC power supply. “Oscillators are often equipped in many communication devices, thus are integrated with many novel devices. In this work, we have chosen to integrate the transmitting circuit with a Colpitts oscillator, with components being designed to fit our application and different from other existing patents in terms of circuit layout and component values”, he said.
The transmitting module is equipped with an amplification circuitry so that an adequate signal strength is generated to overcome any possible losses from the system. From the system point of view, not much losses are generated, as this art work uses low-loss coils. The amplifier circuit has been optimized to fit the required signal amplification level that is able to charge mobile devices at the receiver end (load). The transmitter front-end is equipped with a conductive coil for use as a near-field coupling mechanism (coupling via magnetic induction) to allow transfer of energy wirelessly. In this work, coils that are compatible with available industry mobile phones charging technology standards are adopted.
Dr. Mohammed M. Bait-Suwailam added that the new charging device is capable of charging two mobile devices simultaneously and wirelessly. “Each receiving module is equipped with a similar coil as deployed in the transmitting module. A USB adapter is used at the output of each receiving module for ease of connection to charge the batteries of the two mobile phones. The system is able to detect when a mobile phone needs to be charged or not, and that is accomplished through the use of standard communication protocols, Bluetooth in this development. A switch has also been integrated with the system as a back-up mechanism to initiate mobile devices whenever needed to be charged”, he said.
