On Thursday, January 25, the College of Medicine and Health Sciences at Sultan Qaboos University and the College of Medicine at Weill Cornell Qatar had partnered in holding a Health Promotion and Chronic Disease Screening Event. The event took place at Muscat City Center, where a total of 45 students from both colleges teamed up in organizing and running the event. The event covered common chronic diseases that have significant social impact such as high blood pressure, diabetes mellitus, high cholesterol, colon and breast cancers, and hereditary blood disorders.
The activities were ran across six stations where health screening, education, and professional consultations were offered. The participants had the chance to obtain new information and expand their level of awareness about common diseases. The information given was on how to recognize all the symptoms, acknowledge the risk factors as well as gaining the chance of undergoing free blood glucose, cholesterol, uric acid testing, and a measure of blood pressure.
The general message to the public from this event is that "Early detection is the best protection". This activity is in line with the mission of College of Medicine & Health Sciences at Sultan Qaboos University to promote collaborations with medical colleges from around the world. These collaborations are essential in linking the academic knowledge gained by medical students and applying it in order to provide service to the community.
