The first meeting of the National Bioethics Committee for the year 2018 was chaired by HE Dr. Ali bin Saud Al Baimani, Vice Chancellor of Sultan Qaboos University and Chairman of the Committee, in the presence of the members of the Committee on Thursday morning at the University Council Hall.
The meeting discussed several topics on the agenda of the meeting, such as the proposal of early medical examination for genetic diseases with the concerned parties. The committee discussed the eighth intellectual forum entitled ethical aspects of genetically modified foods. The team held several meetings to prepare the themes and the panel of speakers for the forthcoming conference on bioethics scheduled for September 2018.
The Committee is also working on the establishment of a national document on the ethical principles of scientific publishing. The committee seeks to establish a national system for the development of bioethics committees by monitoring their performance and confirming their adherence to accepted international guidelines. The committee also promotes awareness of bioethics and the definition of the committee, its specialties and activities by organizing a media program.
The National Bioethics Committee also seeks to develop the capacity of its staff through participation in a number of local and international workshops.
