Oman is situated on the eastern side of the
Arabian peninsula and is famous for its varied landscape which
includes spectacular mountains and fiord lands in the north, sand
seas and lush green mountains in the south.
The 1700km coastline is noted for its rich
fisheries and turtle beaches. The maritime connection has ensured
that Oman has had a long and interesting history reflected in
abundant archaeological remains. In the ancient world. Oman was a
major source of copper and frankincense and in the 16th century
Omanis founded an empire along the East African coast. Muscat, the
capital of Oman is a modern cosmopolitan city preserving the best of
the old and new. Modern buildings, ancient souks and castles stand
side by side. In the souks traditional Omani craft silverware and
jewelry as well as frankincense and myrrh can be bought. In
February the temperature in Muscat is around 30 ºC.
