Department of Crop Sciences
Welcome Message:
The Department of Crop Sciences is a dynamic and forward-looking part of the College of Agricultural and Marine Sciences. With research active staff in agronomy, horticulture, plant breeding, plant biotechnology, entomology and plant pathology, the quality of the output is truly world class.
From molecular biology to farmer-participatory research, the focus of our research is on addressing the crop production constraints in the Sultanate of Oman. DNA is sequenced, plant protoplasts are fused, new salinity-tolerant crops are domesticated, crop varieties local to Oman are preserved, natural pesticides are evaluated, date palms are mechanically pollinated and farmers are introduced to the means by which there pesticide applications can be reduced.
The health and welfare of the nation and the region are our prime concern. Of course cutting edge research is the fuel for cutting edge teaching. Our students receive up to date instruction, including web-based materials, from staff and are encouraged to play a full part in the development of the department.
So, whether you're visiting the site for the first time or you are an old friend, welcome to the Department of Crop Sciences, find out here how we're assisting the Omani nation to realize its full potential in crop production and crop protection.
