Student Exchange Regulations


I. Incoming Students

Applicants for the Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) Student Exchange Program, at both the undergraduate level, must be currently enrolled at a university, preferably an affiliated university or organization which as an exchange agreement with SQU. Additionally, applicants must have completed at least half of their degree program requirements at their home university, with a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.7 on a scale of 4.0 or equivalent.

Exchange students must be nominated by the home university but the final decision of acceptance is made by SQU and is based on the individual assessment of each application. Internship and Training programs at SQU have different entry requirements.

The home university’s International Office, or its equivalent, can provide more information regarding exchange opportunities. Exchange students are responsible for checking their eligibility for participation in an exchange program, including language requirements appropriate for the medium of instruction of the relevant program at SQU.

If accepted as Exchange student at SQU, the applicant will receive the decision as a formal Letter of Acceptance a few weeks after the deadline. It is important that applicant brings this letter with him/her when coming to the Sultanate of Oman.

Courses for Exchange students

Exchange students may take an combination of courses, provided that they meet the prerequisite(s) specified for each course. The courses must always be approved by the home university prior to arrival. Please note that certain restrictions apply to some medical programs. The office of International Relations (OIR) should be contacted for clarity on such issues (their details are provided at the end of the application form).

Because of limited space, exchange students are now allowed to register for summer courses, but can take Internship and Training programs during the summer.

Application Form

The application form for Exchange students to SQU is available on-line. If an applicant has been nominated by his/her university, he/she should complete the form and print it. The form should then be signed and sent to OIR.
The form includes an application for on-campus accommodation, proof of official nomination by the home university and a list of course approved by the home university. Documents to be included with the application are:

  •  Original Transcript of academic records
  •  6 recent passport photographs with blue back ground
  •  Passport copy
  •  Additional information (if required)

Application Deadlines

The deadline for application entry in the Spring Semester is the end of the second Friday of October and the deadline for application for entry in the Fall Semester is the end of the second Friday of March.

For Internship and Training programs, applicants should contact OIR, since deadlines vary. (please note that Oman is GMT +hrs and working days are Saturday through Wednesday)
Applications received after the deadlines will not be considered.

Fees

Tuition fees for registration may be waived and housing assistance may be available but these issued will be decided on an individual basis.

Health & Insurance

Prior to arrival exchange students should submit proof of comprehensive insurance and medical coverage during their stay as well as a report of a physical examination. Citizens of countries with reciprocal medical agreements are exempted from this requirement.


II. SQU Outgoing Students

SQU students who wish to be hosted by another university must make an application to this effect.

  1.  Students should apply in writing to their Head of Department.
  2.  Students should attain a minimum cumulative GPA OF 2.7, completed 60 credits and should not be in their final year.
  3.  Students are allowed a maximum of one academic year of full time study at the host institution.
  4.  Approved credits passed with a grade equivalent to at least a "C" within the SQU system will be recorded and counted towards the credit total of the degree, but not calculated in the cumulative GPA.
  5.  Official transcripts from the host institution will be required to complete the process.
  6. Students must comply with policies and academic regulations of the host institution.
  7.  Sultan Qaboos University has no responsibility for financing the students during their study abroad.
The approved request should be forward to the Deanship of Admissions and Registration through the Dean of the College. If approved, the request for departure will go to the concerned College and the Office of International Relations (OIR).
