THE DEPARTMENT OF ARCHAEOLOGY

The department, established in the College of Arts in 1993, aims to prepare an Omani workforce qualified in Archaeology, who is able to work competently in survey and archaeological discovery, museum management, cultural heritage maintenance, and tourism.

The department has been very active in all areas of research.  For instance, faculty members have participated in excavations at Wadi Al-Saphaphere and Al-Baleed and have been involved in fieldwork at a number of other archaeological sites in the Sultanate.   The photography laboratory produces drawings and scientific photographs for research and studies, and print slides as educational aids.  The department also maintains    amuseum for Omani artifacts and archaeological remains.

Faculty members have contributed to the preservation of Omani culture and heritage through their participation  in Arab and international forums, conferences, and cultural organizations. They have also published numerous   workpapers and scholarly articles, some of which have been read before cultural organizations such as the Omani Historical Association.
