THE DEPARTMENT OF LIBRARY AND INFORMATION SCIENCE
This department was created to answer the need in
Omani society for qualified specialists in the field of
library and information science. Its existence is a
tribute to the importance information technology in
today's world. Access to accurate, up-to-date information
is essential for decision making in widely diverse areas
such as finance, politics, industry, education, science,
and medicine.
Because the students recognize importance of its
subject matter, this department is one of the most
popular in the College of Arts. The program requires
students to complete departmental, university and college
requirements as well as electives. Special emphasis is
placed on the use of computers.
Various teaching methods, materials, and equipment are
used in the department: lectures, seminars, field trips,
audio-visual aids, and computer instruction.
The faculty has participated in a number of research
projects, forums, and conferences, both in the Sultanate
and abroad. In addition, faculty members have published
numerous research papers and scientific studies on issues
concerning library science and information. One hundred
and eighty-six students have graduated from the department
and are working in public institutions such as the
Ministry of Education and Sultan Qaboos University as well
as in private concerns such as banks, factories and other
organizations.
