The History Department at Sultan Qaboos University was established in September 1986 as a unit in the Department of Arts in the College of Education and Islamic Studies. At that time, it offered one university requirement (Oman and the Islamic Civilization) in addition to several other courses in accordance with the study plans for the students of history and geography in the College of Education.
In September 1987, the College of Arts was established with the Department of History and Geography being one of its departments. In 1993, the History Department was established as an independent department within the College.
In September 2001, the Department established a Master’s program with two tracks in Islamic and modern history. Since its inception, a growing number of students from the Ministry of Education and other institutions joined the program to expand their knowledge of history as well as to improve their performance and professional development.
This proposal includes a short background about the Department, its vision, mission and objectives. It also discusses the rationale for the doctorate program, its vision, mission, objective, and outcomes. It also explores the admission requirements, language of instruction, and study plan. It includes courses and their descriptions, the thesis requirements, the Department’s current and anticipated needs, and the program’s evaluation by expert referees.
