Introduction 

Your academic studies give you the backbone of what is needed in order for you to get a career. But, it is no longer enough to actually bag the best career opportunities. Here is a program that can help improve your chances and bring you one step closer to your dream job. The self Development Program is a non-credit program comprising career education workshops and related activities. 

The program is designed for students who have 4 or less semesters left to graduation and who have successfully completed the Career Capabilities program. Accompanying it is the Successful Career Planning text book, from which four very large sections will be discussed: 

Section one: Self Assessment 

  • Personality & Attitude
  • Skills & Achievements
  • Values
  • Interests  

Section Two: Decision Making 

  • Career Objectives
  • Personal Objectives
  • Community Service
  • Lifelong Learning
  • Setting Up Your Action Plan  

Section Three: Employment Contacts

  • Job Search
  • CVs
  • Cover / Application Letters
  • Job Interviews  

Section Four: Work 

  • Work Offers & Acceptance
  • Success at Work
  • Work Ethics 

Programme Structure

The programme is divided into 3 parts. Each part has its set of activities and upon completion a set of points are allocated per part. 

I: Workshops & Mock Interview (50 points in total)

  • 4 Workshops
    One: Self Assessment 10 points

Two: Decision Making 10 points

Three: Employment Contacts 10 points

Four: Work 10 points

Mock Interview 10 points

II: Exercises (Bonus)

  • Selected exercises from the
    “Successful Career Planning” textbook

III: Applying to a “Real” Job (50 points in total)

  • Write a custom CV & cover / application letter for an advertised job 20 points
  • Interview a potential employer or professor 10 points
  • Verifiable volunteer or community work for at least one month 20 points

Note:

  • There may be additional exercises and activities.
  • Point(s) allocation may only change with respect to unforeseen circumstances – after approval of instructor.
