About DCS

The Department of Computer Science in College of Science at Sultan Qaboos University was established in September 1995. It provides excellence in teaching, research and expert advice. Computer Science is a broad field encompassing such diverse subject areas as Software Engineering, Computer Software System Development, Database Management, Embedded Systems, Web Computing, Real Time Systems, Networking, Image Processing, Compilers, Automata Processing, Artificial Intelligence, Parallel Processing, Operating Systems, Programming, and Bioinformatics. Knowledge of Software Development Methods, Mathematics, Computer Systems and Natural Sciences is applied to the theory, development, and implementation of information technology Software Systems for the benefit of the society.

Our academic staff and technicians are well equipped with the best qualifications and experience to meet the expectations of the College and the University. The Department strives to stay abreast of technology growth and development and recognizes the fact that learning is a multifaceted continuous process. The Department encourages e-learning and integrates computational techniques in several courses. The Department manages the Foundation Program with regards to IT and offers a minor in Computer Science for those students who complete the required total number of credits. Also it contributes significantly to the teaching of science and IT teachers. The Department has a number of excellent laboratories with advanced facilities for teaching and research and also shares other facilities within the College and the University. There are several active research groups within the Department, which have been producing a steadily stream of research publications of international caliber and which maintain strong research collaborations with international institutions. All staff are committed and work together to achieve the visions and missions of the Department, College and the University.

Mission Statement:

The mission of the Department of Computer Science is to provide an outstanding education in computer science with a rich diversity of skills, to contribute to the community prosperity through professional services and research, and to prepare graduates able to engage in life-long learning and capable of carrying out real practice with competence. It seeks to achieve excellence in all areas of teaching and learning, research and community service. It also seeks to promote the principles of scientific analysis and creative thinking, to participate in the production, development and distribution of knowledge, and to interact with national and international communities

Program Educational Objectives:

Our undergraduate program shall:

• Produce graduates with broad education, yet focused knowledge in different areas of Computer Science with ability to identify problems and design optimized solutions, central to modern Computer Science practice.
• Produce graduates capable of communicating and working effectively in a multidisciplinary environment.
• Provide broad education that fosters community and global responsibility.
• Produce graduates that have the ability to accept and develop new directions in their related fields of activity and to adopt innovations in the Computer Science field.
