Introduction

The Department of Mathematics & Statistics is among the largest departments at SQU in terms of the number of courses offered, students taught and faculty employed. In addition to the teaching of mathematics and statistics and student advising, the department is actively engaged in basic and applied research. Some of the research done is of direct relevance to Oman.

The undergraduate and graduate curricula are designed in accordance with international standards and practices to prepare students for successful careers. Curricula are developed to meet the special needs of prospective employers as well as the advances taking place in mathematical sciences. The department also plays an active role in contributing to community service through the expertise of its staff and students.

Vision Statement

Our vision is to be a premier leader in the educational process that produces life-long learners, creative problem-solvers, productive employees and responsible citizens.

Teaching Objectives

  • to provide the best possible courses and services for students and departments at SQU
  • to foster student self learning, so they are more responsible for their learning
  • to develop student interest and ability in the mathematical sciences
  • to develop positive attitudes towards mathematical sciences and a love for learning

 

Teaching Strategies 

  •  
demonstrate the relevance and elegance of the subject by providing suitable courses at all levels

anticipate feedback from students and departments on our coursework by seeking their opinion and respecting their judgment

promote interdisciplinary study by encouraging students to study subjects which involve mathematics and statistics in some way

develop communication skills in students by including written and oral work in some courses

facilitate preparation of collaborative projects that interrelate multiple aspects of our work

to improve computing facilities and technical support for students and staff

to ensure office and teaching facilities are appropriate for students and staff

Administration Strategies

stress the teaching needs of staff and the learning needs of students to improve the department's educational budget

enhance the department's profile on and off campus by advertising its activities, and their significance for Oman

keep adequate staffing levels to cater for the increasing number of students

maintain department facilities and activities at an optimal level by planning for the future

maintain open communication and decision-making procedures

Community Objectives

to determine and satisfy Oman's need for mathematics and statistics

to enhance the society's appreciation of the usefulness of the subject

Community Strategies

influence the content and delivery of the school syllabus in Oman by maintaining links with the Ministries of Education and Higher Education

provide a consulting service for people and departments on and off campus
  •  
demonstrate the usefulness of our discipline by providing workshops and short courses for specific interest groups
  •  
support and facilitate consultancy projects of the department staff with government and industry organizations.
