Accreditation is a process that requires programs to undergo comprehensive, periodic evaluations, and assures that the graduates are well-prepared and ready for advanced study and real-world employment.
The Mechatronics Engineering Program (MCE) has started a systematic process for quality assurance applied to its programs and also moved through the required stages that lead to accreditation for its programs, according to the standards of the ABET since it was launched. In 2009, the MCE program was one of the first four programs of the College of Engineering to get ABET accreditation. In 2014 the program renewed its ABET accredited. The hard work of the faculty members involved in the MCE program, their motivation, and the constant support of its stakeholders, including potential employers, alumni, Industrial Advisory board, students and faculty were the key drivers to this achievement.
The MCE program has firmly stamped the quality and authentication of the program by successfully securing the ABET accreditation during the second cycle. The thorough vetting of programs’ curriculum, its delivery, outcome and achievement of program educational objectives by ABET teams has proven the quality of our program.
Despite its young age, over the past few years, the MCE program has successfully gained maturity and is striving for excellence. Our goal is to maintain an internationally acceptable standard, which will allow our graduates to compete at international levels in terms of job requirements, research challenges, and developing innovative solutions.
It requires that the program curriculum be current and have high standards, include all of the essential elements, and maintain a competitive edge, so graduates can find employment compatible with their abilities and the demands of industry. Accredited programs attract high caliber faculty members to the higher education institutions. The level and quality of teaching and learning in the program will also be raised considerably. In addition, accreditation can serve as a tool to justify and obtain greater program support from the university administration and government. Among other important benefits, accreditation guarantees the acceptability of the student's undergraduate education as a basis for advanced study such as in post-graduate studies abroad. In addition to allowing the program to develop and maintain a good relationship with industry, accreditation is very valuable in the area of recruiting student into industry after graduation.
The accreditation process requires the MCE program to continually review and update its curriculum following a well-designed quality assurance process. This process is periodic and constitutes a set of student outcomes and program objectives-dependent actions. Indeed each 6 years, the program undertakes a substantial revision of in objectives to satisfy the requirements of its stakeholders, namely the employers. Evaluation of student outcomes is normally done every three years. The review of the program educational objections and the evaluation of student outcomes together may lead, if needed, to a substantial change of the curriculum. This can include addition/removal/update of courses, lab update, reinforcement of some student outcomes through new course material, etc.
