General Hematology Laboratory

 

The General Hematology Laboratory offers a wide range of tests, using advanced automated technology, as well as consultative services in the diagnosis of hematological diseases and disorders.

The laboratory offers an efficient service for processing full blood count, blood films and bone marrow samples. It offer expert interpretations and consultative advice on peripheral blood, bone marrow, CSF specimens, lymph node biopsies and other body fluids.

In addition, the laboratory undertake Malaria screening and identification, Sickle cell screening and G6PD screening.

Hours of Operation
The Hematology Laboratory is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.Only an Emergency Service is available on weekends, public holidays, and from 4.00pm - 8.00am on week days.

Turnaround Time
The turnaround time for each test can be found in the individual test description. For further details or to request ASAP testing in a emergency situation, please contact the Hematology Laboratory. [Ext.4918]

Specimen Handling
Hematology tests are extremely sensitive to methods of collection and preservation. It is important that the sample collection and processing instructions be followed so accurate test results can be obtained.

Unacceptable Specimen Samples
Samples which are incorrectly collected, labeled, processed, or transported will not produce accurate results. When a sample is not acceptable, you will be notified by telephone. If you have any question prior to collection or transportation of a sample, please contact Hematology Laboratory on extension 4918 for more information.

The Hematology Laboratory Receiving area is located on the 2nd floor of block 9 room 2972 (Laboratories building).

Test Results
Test results will be entered in Trackcare system by the Hematology staff upon completion of testing.

 TARGET TEST TURNAROUND TIME

1) SECTION 1 (URGENT – IMPORTANT) = LESS THAN ONE HOUR (depending on the test requested).
2) SECTION 3 (URGENT – LESS-IMPORTANT) = MAXIMUM ONE HOUR (Depending on the test requested).
3) SECTION 5 (URGENT – NOT RECEIVABLE) = MAXIMUM ONE HOUR (Depending on the test requested and how fast the request was updated).
4) SECTION 2 (ROUTINE – IMPORTANT) = AFTER AUTHORISING 1,3&5
SECTION 4 (ROUTINE – LESS IMPORTANT) = AFTER AUTHORISING 1, 3, 5 & 2 or within 4 to 6 hours. (depending on the test requested).
SECTION 6 (ROUTINE – NOT RECEIVABLE) = AFTER AUTHORISING ALL THE SECTIONS
