GASTRITIS
Siddiq, M. The "Fuad Syndrome". May 1986;II(4):27-31.
Junior Specialist, Medicine, Sumail District Hospital.
"Fuad" and "Fuadi" are colloquial terms used to describe,
and are characterised by, symptoms like epigastric pain,
discomfort, palpitations, dyspnea of acute onset and
signs suggestive of peptic ulcer disease, hypertensive
heart disease, myocardial ischemia and many other
symptoms/signs. "Fuad" means "heart" and "Fuadi" means
"my heart". The purpose of this study was to make an
attempt to reduce the existing confusion by analysing the
patients who attended the OPD with the complaints of
"Fuad" and match them with the underlying pathology. On
an average 14,000 to 15,000 patients attended the OPD of
Sumail Hospital, each month, and of whom 30 to 40% (about
4,500) with Fuad syndrome, and consume around 75kg of
antacids within and outside the hospital.

GASTROENTEROLOGY
Huseinbhoy, S; DUA, K.S.; ZUBAIDI, G. Two years of
experience of sclerotherapy at the Royal Hospital.
August 1990;VII(1):6-9. Registrar; Senior Registrar;
Senior Consultant, Department of Gastroenterology, Royal
Hospital.
Bleeding from oesophageal is one of the most serious and
often life threatening forms of upper gastrointestinal
haemorrhage. One third of the patients with cirrhosis do
not survive the first haemorrhage and Olsson did not find
any survivors among the patients with child C liver
disease six months after the first haemorrhage.
Management of variceal haemorrhage has been a most
frustrating and persistant challenge to physicians and
surgeons. Recently endoscopic sclerotherapy is becoming
popular for both acute bleeding episodes and achieving
long term obliteration of oesphageal varices. Most
reports of long term sclerotherapy come from institutions
where alcohol or schistosomiasis are the major causes of
cirrhosis. Experience of sclerotherapy in Oman where
hepatitis B is the major cause of cirrhosis is presented.

Shah, S; DUA, K.S.; ZUBAIDI, G. Therapeutic endoscopy : our
experience. August 1990;VII(1):2-5. Medical Officer;
Senior Registrar; Senior Consultant, Department of
Gastroenterology, Royal Hospital.
The introduction of flexible fibre-optic and video
endocopes at the turn of 20th century has opened the
gates to the advancing science of gastroenterology. Today
the gastroenterologist can offer his patient several
forms of non-invasive treatment, thereby avoiding
surgical intervention in many instances. As technology
continues to progress, one is aware of the tremendous
potential that this field has to offer to the
gastroenterologist of the future.
