Welcome to the Mechatronics Engineering Program, College of Engineering at Sultan Qaboos University, Sultanate of Oman. The program is offered jointly by the Departments of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, and Electrical and Computer Engineering. The Bachelor degree program attracted a group of 20 students in 2003 and has steadily grown to approximately 100 students at the end of academic year 2007-2008. It was Oman’s first mechatronics engineering degree program, which was started in anticipation of needs of industries in Oman. The idea was to produce more of a Renaissance engineer who can work in a number of disciplines and at the same time have a good knowledge of soft skills.
As the program’s name implies, students will be taught a mix of mechanical, electrical and electronics and software engineering, to enable them to work in a variety of fields or fields where an interdisciplinary knowledge would be helpful. The Program is spread over eight to nine semesters depending on English language requirement.
However, highly motivated, smart and dedicated students do finish their studies earlier than the stipulated duration. It provides a solid foundation in maths and basic science before embarking on program related courses. Through a nice blend of course work and projects, the two departments endow students with the ability to apply knowledge of science, mathematics and engineering to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams, provide leadership and technical expertise, and practice engineering with concern for society and environment. The graduates of the program can become future leaders for industry, academia, government and society in Oman whose vision is founded upon interdisciplinary knowledge, creative and analytical skills, local/regional perspective and ethics.
The Steering Committee for Mechatronics Engineering Program is responsible for all the activities of the program. The Committee includes faculty members from both department as well as the heads of two departments and the Assistant Dean for Student Academic Affairs. The steering committee is responsible to run and continuously develop and implement plans for program improvement.
