Sultan Qaboos University is the realization of the promise announced by His Majesty Sultan Qaboos Bin Said during the tenth Anniversary of Oman’s National Day in 1980.  Sultan Qaboos University and the College of Medicine & Health Sciences were established in 1986, and since then have undergone impressive development and growth. Construction of the buildings started in 1982 and the first batch of SQU students was enrolled in 1986.

In accordance with the Royal Directives of His Majesty, the University commenced with five colleges: Medicine, Engineering, Agriculture, Education & Islamic Sciences, and Science. The College of Arts was opened in 1987, and the College of Commerce & Economics was established in 1993.

The name of the College was changed to “College of Medicine & Health Sciences“.

Organization & evolution of the College of Medicine

In the inception, the College of Medicine consisted of the College Administration, 20 Departments and the Medical Library. The College Administration includes the Dean’s Office, the offices of the three Assistant Deans for: Clinical affairs, Preclinical affairs, and Research & Postgraduate Studies, the office of the Director of Administration, Education Office, and Examinations Office.

The Dean is the Chief Executive of the College, responsible for managing the academic and administrative affairs, formulating policies, liaising with the University Administration, and representing the College.

Specified academic responsibilities are delegated to the Assistant Deans according to the Executive Regulations of the University Charter. Administrative affairs are delegated to the Director of Administration. The Dean chairs the College Board.

Almost all the College departments are represented in the Sultan Qaboos University Hospital. The Dean chairs the Hospital Board and thus forms the administrative link between the College and SQUH.
