Pre-Clinical Program (year 4, Semester 7) PATHOLOGY 3115 The course describes the general principles of the reaction of tissues to diseases and the disorders that affect the body as a whole. It begins with the reaction of cells and tissues to injury with the differences between reversible and irreversible injury being stressed. Next is the study of inflammation, a common cellular and vascular tissue response to injury. Some injuries induce characteristic patterns of inflammation but most inflammatory reactions have elements in common. Inflammation is usually followed by repair or healing. Body and tissue responses to infectious agents are also discussed. After that, the course deals with disturbances of fluid in the body and disorders of blood flow and distribution. Finally growth disturbances and in particular, cancer is studied. The students should know how to identify the cause, recall and explain the basic mechanisms of common and important diseases. Also, describe and recognize the general gross and microscopic changes caused by disease and understand their effects on organ systems and the patient as a whole. Clinical Program (year 5) Cardiovascular System Nervous System Respiratory System Endocrinology G.I.T. System The students are exposed to an Interdisciplinary Activity Week in Forensic Medicine arranged by a forensic pathologist invited from outside. Clinical Program (Year 6) The students attend post-mortems at the Royal Oman Police mortuary and maintain a logbook for the same. Clinical Program (Year 7) The students have a one week clinical laboratory rotation.
