Sultan Qaboos University, Academic Publication Board
Guidelines for Book Publication
1. Introduction

Sultan Qaboos University publishes books of an academic nature in accordance with its mission. These publications aim to contribute to the preservation and dissemination of information on the cultural and natural heritage of the Sultanate and to disseminate pure and applied research findings, which provide intellectual and practical benefits to mankind in general, and the Sultanate in particular, in technical, scientific, economic and humanities fields of academic interest. The Academic Publications Board (APB), under the Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Postgraduate Studies and Research (DVCPSR), is responsible for overseeing academic publications at Sultan Qaboos University (SQU). This handout provides a summary of the policy and procedures for publishing books. Full details are provided in the Regulations and Procedures, which can be obtained from the Scientific Publication Department (SPD).

2. Categories of Books Considered
Sultan Qaboos University welcomes original book manuscripts, written either in Arabic or English, in the broad fields of science, medicine, engineering, agriculture, humanities and social sciences. Categories include research findings, reviews, textbooks, authenticated and annotated copies of historical documents and translations of documents of academic interest. Submissions must be original and not previously published and books are only published after a thorough peer review process.

The SQU APB does not consider for publication in book form:

  • Masters or doctoral theses
  • Material published elsewhere
  • Directories/guides
  • Conference proceedings
  • Lecture notes
3. Procedures
3.1 Submissions
Authors who believe their material qualifies for publication in book form by SQU must submit to the Scientific Publication Department:
  1. Three hard copies and one soft copy of the manuscript.
  2. A book proposal form completed and signed.
  3. One-page summaries (Arabic & English) and a table of contents.
  4. CVs of authors.
  5. A list of three potential reviewers.

3.2 Evaluation

The proposal receives preliminary screening by the SPD to ensure that all submission criteria are met and that the documentation is complete. If not, the material is returned to author. If the material is complete it is considered by the APB, which either rejects it or sends it to referees. A manuscript may also be subject to internal reviewing before going to external referees. Finally, it is reconsidered by the APB after receipt of referees reports and, if accepted, returned to the author(s) for revision.

3.3 Publication

If the revised version of the book is found to be in acceptable form the APB proceeds to publication. At this point the author signs a copyright form, suggests the number of copies to be printed and agrees on any payment, etc as per APB Regulations. The author is also responsible for proof reading before final printing and will receive an agreed number of copies.
4.Enquiries

Queries can be addressed to the Scientific Publication and Information Department by telephone (+968 24141878) or email (psr@squ.edu.om).
