Message from the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Postgraduate Studies and Research

Welcome to the Sultan Qaboos University Research website, which outlines our research programs and activities.

The university has vigorously promoted research activity by providing management structures, funding schemes, qualified staff, state-of-the-art infrastructure, regulations, electronic management systems, research centers and chairs.  Our aim is to create a sustainable research culture able to contribute to the country’s development plans and to Omani society in general. Financial support may arise from HM Strategic Research Grants, University Internal Funds, External Contracts, Consultancy and Services. Our research aim is especially to address practical and strategic issues concerning industry, the environment and the community at large, in Oman and in the wider Gulf region.

Research in key disciplines is coordinated and facilitated through nine centers which serve as focal points for researchers within SQU and the Sultanate and for interested international scholars.  These include the Remote Sensing & GIS Center, the Communication & Information Research Center, the Oil & Gas Research Center, the Center of Environmental Studies and Research, the Water Research Center, the Earthquake Monitoring Center, the Marine Biotechnology, Research Center, the Center for Omani Studies and the Humanities Research Center. 

Research output addressing issues of importance to the Sultanate and the Gulf region is peer reviewed and published in international outlets, including the following six SQU journals: The Sultan Qaboos University Journal for Science, The Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal, The Journal of Engineering Research, Agricultural and Marine Sciences, The Journal of Educational and Psychological Studies, and The Journal for Arts and Social Sciences.

The University has a medium-range strategic plan that charts its path for the period 2009–2013. The plan outlines strategies for building research capacity and for nurturing research excellence to benefit Omani society.
