Major Week Fair 10/12/2007
The Major Week Fair for the College of
Science/Computer Science is going to be on this Monday 10
December. It is an important event for the department therefore,
we need your participation for this event. Please register with
Mrs Nida.
M.Sc. Seminar 10/12/2007
The MSc
student Zahraa Al-Lawati will give her second MSc seminar on
Monday 10 Dec 2007 from 9:00 to 10:00 in the DCS conference
room. Below is the seminar title and abstract.
Title: PERFORMANCE
EVALUATION OF ROUTING PROTOCOLS FOR WIRELESS AD-HOC NETWORKS
Abstract:
Wireless network is an emerging new technology that allows
users to access information and services electronically. Ad-hoc
networks are self-organizing network that might consist of
thousands of devices. One of the most important tasks is to
deliver data from one device to another. Several routing
algorithms were proposed and evaluated in the recent years.
Wireless networks have special limitations such as limited
bandwidth, highly dynamic topology, limited range of links due
to the nature of the network that serves anyone anywhere and
anytime. Ad-hoc networks are used in emergency search – and
–rescue operations or for data acquisitions operations in
inhospitable environment.
This project aims
at conducting a comparative performance evaluation of selected
routing protocols for ad-hoc networks including AODV, OLSR and
ZRP. The project studies performance characteristics of the
selected protocols using the NS-2 simulator. We measure the
end-to-end delay, average routing distance and number of lost
packets for different conditions of network load, network size
and mobility intervals.
The delay is very
much affected by the network load unlike the average routing
distance. OLSR is not much affected by change in mobility as it
gets the optimal paths to destinations. Number of lost packets
in AODV is less than the lost packets in OLSR.
In large networks,
using AODV may be preferred over OLSR to reduce the amount of
overhead. If the ad-hoc networks are established for emergency
and rescue purposes then, OLSR will be more helpful as the paths
are optimal and ready and hence the delay is less compared with
AODV.

E-Learning Workshop: 11-12-12/2007
As per the College
initiative in enhancing our traditional teaching using
e-learning mode and a firm decision on e-Learning
implementation, the College e-Learning committee has come with a
course model for the phase 1 implementation of every Science
course in the coming Spring 2008 semester. In order to help
every instructor in the college to implement their courses in a
standard manner, a workshop by CET has been organized on 11th
and 12th December 2007 between 10am and 12 noon in the lab18
(open access lab). This workshop will be useful for the
beginners as well as for all others to come to know about the
model course implementation. Please don't ignore this
opportunity. Every one is requested to register for one of the
sessions (either 11th or 12th dec) in the Dean's office (the
coordinators: Mr. Mohammed Al-Wehaibi or Ms. Malou) as soon as
possible.

Preparation of Course
Outcomes and Course Outlines (Wednesday 14/11)
The Department
Accreditation and Curriculum Committees are organizing a
Workshop on the
"Preparation of
Course Outcomes and Course Outlines"
to the faculty on Wed 14 Nov, at 2:15 p.m. in the Department’s
seminar room. The general outline of the Workshop will include:
a. General
guidelines on course oucomes preparation (KD).
b. Examples of
outcomes from accredited computer science programs (BA).
c. Procedure for
course outcomes preparation and approval (HZ).
d. Course
outline format (AA).
e. Open
discussion.
All faculty members
involved in teaching Core and Electives courses during the
Spring 2008 are invited to attend this Workshop in order to pave
the road for starting preparations to establishing Course Files
for the course assessment process.
Itisalat University Contest
(28-29 March 2007)
A team from our
department participated in the 7th NPC, 28-29 March 2007 in
Itisalat College, Sharjah UAE. The team consisted of Ali Hassan
Abdulali, Hassan Omar Al Marhoon, Jaifar Hassan Al Shezawi
(participants) and Dr. Hamza Zidoum (coach). The students
selection was based on the following criteria: GPA, performance
in programming-related courses and cohort. Our team ranked
6 out of 34 participating teams. They solved 5 out of 9 proposed
problems.Actually, they
solved the same number of problems as the 4th, and 5th but in
longer time or with more penalties.
