The Department was established as a founding department of the College of Science with the name "Department of Mathematics and Computing (DOMAC)" in 1986. Later in 1995, the Department of Computer Science was established and the main body became  the "Department of Mathematics and Statistics (DOMAS)". The department was created in response to the growing needs of Oman for scientifically trained mathematicians and statisticians. It is among the largest departments of Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) in terms of both the number of courses offered and the number of staff employed. The department offers courses spanning the introductory to advanced levels and to the students from the Colleges of Agriculture and Marine Sciences, Commerce and Economics, Education and Islamic Sciences, Engineering, and Science. After the language center, it conducts largest amount of service teaching at SQU.

DOMAS is committed to academic pursuits which will meet its obligation to the community and the nation. The department emphasizes high quality teaching, innovative research, and community service. It offers Bachelor of Science degrees in Mathematics, Statistics, and Statistics with a minor in Health Statistics. The M.Sc. degree in Statistics started in Fall 1999, the M.Sc. in Pure Mathematics in Fall 2001, and the M.Sc. in Applied Mathematics in Fall 2003. These programmes provide adequate training to the students and prepare them to undertake key positions within the growing economy of Oman. Our graduates are highly solicited in industry, service companies, and government, as consultants, strategic analysts, and decision makers.

Currently, the department has 52 faculty members, all graduates from internationally reputed universities. The faculty members strive to maintain a competitive research environment resulting in scientific publications and consulting contracts with industry. Their areas of research span a wide range of subjects varying from the purely theoretical to the applied.
