Office of the Assistant Dean for Postgraduate Studies & Research (ADPGSR) is responsible for coordinating the admission and registration process of postgraduate students with the Deanship of Admission & Registration and the Deanship of Postgraduate Studies in the University. Office of the ADPGSR and the College Postgraduate committee are responsible in coordinating efforts to run and improve postgraduate programs, increase the number of postgraduate students, and facilitate funding resources for College of Science (CoS) postgraduate students.

In this web page, we provide you information on postgraduate programs available in the College of Science, links to information inside SQU, postgraduate students services in the college and the university, forms that may be required for new applicants and registered postgraduate student at the College of Science.


A summary of Postgraduate Procedures College of Science

The college of Science (CoS) has 10 postgraduate programs in the disciplines of Biology, Environmental Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Earth Sciences, Hydrogeology, Pure and Applied Math’s, Statistics, and Physics. The CoS has one PhD program in the Department of Earth Sciences. The college postgraduate programs are aimed at serving various sectors that include government, private, and international companies. For example, the graduates from CoS MSc programs are working with Petroleum Development Oman (PDO), Ministry of Higher Education, and Directorate of Water Resources. The ADPGSR is aimed at providing some assistance and guidance to the new and registered postgraduate students and follow up the implementation of the procedures and deadlines in the University.

Current MSc programs in the College of Science are 2 years period and full time. The general objective of these programs is to enhance the academic background of the postgraduate student through 24 credit hours course work and train the student in research skills in the form of a 6 credit hours research project submitted at the end of the second year of the program. The The Committee shall undertake the following duties and responsibilities:

1. Develop and implement appropriate internal regulations and operating procedures

2. Ensure the smooth running of the operational programs in the College

3. Liaise with the office of the Assistant Vice-President for Graduate Studies and Research regarding acceptance of applications, registration of courses, grade records and appointments of examiners

4. Form ad hoc committees to deal with any specific issues relating to admissions, examinations, supervision and any other matter under its responsibilities

The College offers the following programs: 

First: PhD programs taught in English for full-time students:
  1. Biology
  2. Chemistry
  3. Computer Science
  4. Earth Science
  5. Mathematics
  6. Physics
  7. Statistics

Minimum admission Requirements:

1. The applicant should have a Master of Science from Sultan Qaboos University, or from any recognized university.
2. A Cumulative Grade Point Average of not less than 3.00 on a 4 point scale or equivalent in any other system and the Deanship of Postgraduate Studies will make the assessment for equivalency acceptance.
3. Applicant must be full time students for 4 years.
4. The applicants should submit a astatement on the objectives and goals of the research proposed.
5. Three letters of reference , at least 2 from academics, to show competences in the discipline of interest and research capabilities
6. Achieve Band (6) in IELTS Academic with a minimum of 5 in each of its components or (550) in the TOEFL paper-based or (213) in TOEFL through the computer or (79) in the TOEFL through the Internet.
7. Pass the written test and interview held in the chosen department. (if necessary).
8. Applicants must have completed all requirements for the Master Degree.


Second: Master’s programs taught in English:
1. Biology (Full -time)
2. Computer Sciences (Full -time and part -time)
3. Chemistry (Full-time and part -time)
4. Applied Mathematics (Full -time)
5. Pure Mathematics (Full -time)
6. Physics (Full -time and part-time)
7. Statistics (Full -time)
8. Environmental Science (Full -time) 
9. Petroleum Geosciences (Full -time and part-time)

Minimum admission Requirements:
1. Candidates must have Bachelor degree in one of these disciplines in Science , Education(Science and Mathematics) from Sultan Qaboos University, or from any recognized university.
2. A Cumulative Grade Point Average of not less than 2.75 on a 4.00 scale or equivalent in any other system and the Deanship of Postgraduate Studies will make the assessment for equivalency acceptance.
3. Work experiences is a must for candidates with Cumulative Grade Point Average between 2.74 and 2.5 in the Bachelors degree.
4. Applicant from other disciplines can apply for a program, but may be required to take bridging courses. Some of the courses may be offered in the morning time. 
5. Achieve Band (6) in IELTS Academic with a minimum of 5 in each of its components or (550) in the TOEFL paper-based or (213) in TOEFL through the computer or (79) in the TOEFL through the Internet.
6. Pass the written test and/or interview held in the department. (if necessary)
7. Applicants must have completed all requirements for the Bachelor’s degree.
8. For the M.Sc. in Environmental Science, Applicants should have a Bachelor degree in Engineering, Commerce, Medicine, Geography or Agriculture.
9. For the M.Sc. in Computer Science, technical knowledge is required in programming, data structures, algorithms, operating systems, networks and software engineering. The competency of applicants in these topics will be evaluated through admission exam and/or interview.
