Synchronous Bilateral Endometrioid Ovarian Cancer and Uterine Adeno Carcinoma in a Young Woman
*Mansour Al-Moundhri, Mariam Mathew and Andrzej Krolikowski
    April 2001 - Vol. 3, No. 1, p.51-53
Synchronous carcinomas involving both the ovary and uterine corpus are relatively uncommon. These tumours represent a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge, particularly if they have similar histology. Here we present the case of a 34-year-old woman with bilateral endometrioid cancers of both ovaries and adenocarcinoma of the uterus.

Foreign Bodies in the Upper Aero-Digestive Tract
    * Murty PSN, Vijendra S Ingle, Ramakrishna S, Fahim A Shah and Varghese Philip
    October 2001 - Vol. 3, No. 2, p.117-120
Foreign bodies in the upper aero-digestive tract pose major challenges to the otolaryngologist in both diagnosis and management. Aspirated and ingested foreign bodies are often emergencies, leading to inadequate study and poorly prepared, improper attempts at removal. The authors share their experience in managing upper aero-digestive tract foreign bodies in Omani population at a district hospital, present a statistical review of  cases, and highlight certain critical scenarios as well as cultural variations specific to the region. Keywords: foreign body, aero-digestive tract, bronchoscopy, oesophagoscopy, Oman

Thyrotoxicosis in pregnancy : A Case Report
*Bola R Kamath, Kamla J Rao and Adikari AK Mayadunne
    October 2001 - Vol. 3, No. 2, p.113-115
There are various causes of hyperthyroidism in pregnancy such as Graves’ disease and gestational thyrotoxicosis. The thyroid stimulation results from the excessive levels of circulating human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) produced by the trophoblastic tissue in both hydatidiform moles and choriocarcinoma. We present a pregnant patient with hydatidiform mole who presented with hyperthyroidism that resolved after evacuation of the mole. Keywords: thyrotoxicosis, hydatidiform mole, pregnancy, hCG

Pulmonary Infarction : A Rare case of Adrenal Carcinoma
*Sukhpal Sawhney, Ikram Burney and Rajeev Jain
    April 2007 - Vol. 7, No. 1, p.55-57
A case report of unsuspected adrenal carcinoma with pulmonary artery obstruction in a young girl who was admitted with recurrent episodes of hypotension is presented. Computed tomography (CT) scans demonstrated a large right adrenal mass extending into the inferior vena cava (IVC), right atrium, right ventricle and right pulmonary artery. There are many case reports in literature documenting IVC and right atrial thrombus in patients with adrenal carcinoma. To our knowledge, this is the first case report specifically documenting pulmonary infarction secondary to tumour extension into the pulmonary artery. Keywords: Adrenal carcinoma, Pulmonary infarction, Computed Tomography , Case report, Oman.

Ovarian Vein Thrombophlebitis : An Unusual Cause of Postpartum Fever and Abdominal Pain
    *Anupam K Kakaria
    April 2007 - Vol. 7, No. 1, p.59-61
Ovarian vein thrombophlebitis is an uncommon, but potentially serious, complication of complicated deliveries. Prolonged rupture of membranes prior to delivery is a pre-disposing factor. We report a case of a patient with prolonged ruptured membranes, who developed right ovarian vein thrombophlebitis. The patient was managed medically and responded favourably to treatment. Keywords: Prolonged ruptured membranes, Ovrarian vein thrombophlebitis, Postpartum fever, Case report, Oman

Mucormycosis of the Jaw after Dental Extractions : Two Case Reports
    Abdulaziz A Bakathir
    December 2006 - Vol. 6, No. 2, p.77-82
Mucormycosis is a rare opportunistic fungal infection, which is mainly reported to occur in patients with immunocompromised conditions such as uncontrolled diabetes mellitus and leukaemias. In this paper, two cases of mucormycosis are reported after dental extractions. The first case of mucormycosis occurred in the maxilla and mandible of a 14 year old male patient undergoing chemotherapy for acute myeloid leukaemia. The second case occurred in the mandible of a 49 year old male patient with a recently diagnosed type-2 diabetes mellitus, presenting with ketoacidosis and underlying undiagnosed acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. The outcome of these reported cases of mucormycosis was favourable after comprehensive surgical and medical management. Keywords: Mucormycosis, rhinocerebral mucormycosis, complication of dental extraction, case report, Oman

A case of rhabdomyosarcoma in a 2 year old girl without a pre-existing predisposing factor visited the ENT Department of Sultan Qaboos University Hospital (SQUH). Her clinical condition did not point to the diagnosis, which came as a histological surprise. The histopathology report was alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma. Vaginal hirudiniasis from Dhaherah Province, Oman : With a Note on Internal Hirudiniasis
    Mohamed A Idris
    December 2006 - Vol. 6, No. 2, p.83-86
A 75 years old lady from the Dhaherah Province, Oman, presented at Ibri Hospital, complaining from abnormal vaginal bleeding. Histopathological investigations of a cervical biopsy revealed no atypical features. A worm-like organism was removed from the vagina. Histocytological investigations of the organism revealed typical structures of a leech. The case was identified as vaginal hirudiniasis, probably due to Limnatis nilotica that necessitated a note on internal hirudiniasis. Keywords: internal hirudiniasis, vagina, Limnatis nilotica, Case report, Oman.

A Swallowed Fishbone Penetrating the Oesophagus into the Sternomastoid Muscle
    Sabah M Al-Shukry
    April 2003 - Vol. 5, No. 1, p.51-52
A 40-year-old woman presented with the history of swallowing a fishbone one hour earlier. Since the patient was swallowing normally and the X-ray results were negative, she was reassured and sent home. Twenty days later, when the patient again presented with pain and tenderness in her neck, the fishbone was detected in the left sternomastoid muscle, and removed under local anaesthesia.

    A strange type of Pica
    *Marwan M. Al-Sharbati, Ziad A. J. Zaidan, Ala’Adin Al-Hussaini and Khalid Al-Khalili
    April 2003 - Vol. 5, No. 1, p.49-50
Pica, where the patient eats non-food items such as mud, clay, varnish etc., is a common behavioural problem seen in children, pregnant women and the mentally retarded. However sponge pica is a very rare variation. We report a case of a 5-year-old Omani girl, who presented with sponge pica since the age of two years, with recent abdominal pain. Investigations showed anaemia, elevated liver enzymes and normal intelligence. There was no evidence of obsessive-compulsive disorder. Both clinical and laboratory findings showed complete recovery after a few weeks of oral iron therapy. Her appetite improved, and she started to gain weight. No recurrence was observed when followed up after two years. Awareness is necessary to detect and treat pica as early as possible to prevent its complications. Keywords: pica, anemia, sponge pica, abdominal pain, Oman.
