Marketing is concerned with the development of goods and services in the economy, as well as the distribution of these industrial and consumer goods. Because more than one-half of the consumer's earnings goes into paying for marketing services, marketing is a very significant part of the economy. Consequently, the efficiency with which marketing activities are carried out has major financial and social implications.

Manufacturers, wholesalers, retailers and other business firms must formulate and implement a number of marketing strategies and programs. Among the major marketing decisions are product development and product line expansion, selection of distribution channels, maintenance and control of a sales organization, development of a promotional program, and the establishment of service and pricing policies and methods.

Typical entry level positions for graduates from marketing are advertising account executives, marketing research project managers, retail assistant buyers, and sales representatives for consumer or industrial product firms. Graduates with marketing backgrounds also may obtain positions in physical distribution, public relations, wholesale firms, and a variety of governmental and non-profit organizations.
