The Department of Chemistry

The Department of Chemistry at Sultan Qaboos University, Muscat, Oman invites applications for four faculty positions in the areas of: Analytical Chemistry, Biological Chemistry, Physical Chemistry and Inorganic Chemistry, beginning Fall 2014. Successful candidates will also be expected to participate in the teaching of General Chemistry courses and laboratories, when required.

Assistant/Associate Professor in Analytical Chemistry

Candidates should have PhD and postdoctoral research and teaching experience, demonstrate strong commitment to teaching and research in analytical chemistry. Preference will be given to applicants with research interest in electro-analytical chemistry and its applications, and have track record of achievements in teaching the principles of analytical chemistry at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Assistant/Associate Professor in Physical Chemistry

A doctorate degree in physical chemistry with postdoctoral research and teaching experience are required for appointment.  Candidates should have a strong commitment to teaching physical chemistry at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Preferred research areas include but are not limited to energy and alternative energy research, oil and gas, water treatment and desalination.  Successful candidate will be expected to establish an independent research program in physical chemistry in areas of strategic interest to Oman.

Assistant/Associate Professor in Inorganic Chemistry

Candidates with outstanding track record of scholarly activities in either Inorganic Materials with practical expertise in both powder and single-crystal X-ray crystallography or Main-group Inorganic Chemistry with expertise in symmetry and group theory are preferred.  The position entails establishing a vibrant externally funded research programme and a strong commitment to excellence in teaching at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.  Candidates with postdoctoral teaching experience and ability to engage in curriculum development will be given priority.

Assistant/Associate Professor in Biological Chemistry:

Interested candidates are expected to design and participate in the teaching of undergraduate and graduate courses in one or two of the following broadly defined areas: Physical biochemistry, chemical biology and structural biology. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in spectroscopy including the use of NMR and or mass spectrometry for structure-function studies of biopolymers. Successful candidate will be expected to establish a novel research program in of the areas defined above.

The Department of Physics

The Department of Physics, College of Science, Sultan Qaboos University is inviting applications for one position in Electronics:

Assist/Associate Professor of Electronics: The candidate will have a PhD degree in Physics specializing in Electronics/Optoelectronics with proven research experiences in physics of solid state devices from both the experimental and simulation point of views. Knowledge in optoelectronics, lasers and photonics will be treated as additional qualifications. The candidate is expected to teach physics of electronic devices and their practical use in a variety of analogue and digital circuits, where laboratory is an essential component.

Department of Computer Science

Vacant Lecturer Position for 2014/2015

Two Lecturer positions are vacant in the Department of Computer Science, College of Science, at Sultan Qaboos University. The qualified candidates should fulfill the following requirements:

    Hold BSc and M.Sc. degree in Computer Science or related fields. Minimum of 5 years teaching experience in higher education institute. Have good communication skills and ability to teach at the foundation level. Fluent in Arabic and English.

Function & Scope: To manage computer resources efficiently in the Department of Computer Science for instructional and research applications. The Technician is responsible for maintaining and monitoring on all operations of computer laboratories including assisting students, software installation/management, and hardware integrity for future needs by:

  • monitoring the stability and maintaining effectively the computer hardware and peripherals in the department of computer science
  • resolving incidents and problems both directly from teaching labs and special project labs.
  • having experience in a variety of operating systems: Windows (NT, XP, Vista, 7, 8, 2003/2008/2012 Servers), Unix (Sun Solaris 8 or 10), Linux (Ubuntu, CentOS, Fedora, Red Hat).
  • having knowledge in Oracle 10g, 11g or latest version and having knowledge in backup software system like Symantec, Acronis, Macrium Reflect or SCCM 2012.
  • having extensive knowledge of PC, LAN, WLAN technologies, Network printers, desktop/server software, application installation and compatibility
  • working within current resource boundaries to develop practical solutions to computing problems faced by the students and the staff
  • taking timely action when necessary to ensure that critical activities like lab exams are accomplished promptly and successfully
  • preparing periodic reports of computer inventory which is required by the College of Science computer users committee
  • willing to work with minimal supervision
  • having knowledge in E-Learning (Moodle) is an advantage but not required
  • performing other duties as assigned by the department Superintendent and or by the HoD.
QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree in IT related area with at least 7 years of experience

The qualified candidates should have M.Sc. degree in Mathematics. They should have good communication skills and ability to teach at the foundation level. A degree in Mathematics Education is desirable.
