Rock Thin Section lab concerns with preparing three types of samples from rocks and mineral so that they can be examined under the microscope. Theses types are standard thin section, polished thin section and polished blocks. Preparation of thin sections involves about 8 steps in order to produce the final thin section sample. It starts with cutting a chip from the rock hand specimen, impregnation, grinding, lapping, bonding with glass slide, trimming, final lapping and polishing when required. Several types of machines and materials are used in the process of preparing theses types of samples. Standard thin sections can be then studied under the transmitted light microscope while polished thin sections and polished blocks are examined using reflected light microscope or the scanning electron microscope (SEM).
