Sultan Qaboos University makes extensive use of computer technology so the HelpDesk has become essential service. It was established in 1998 to serve the users needs, which gives the department an important role.
The HelpDesk finds technical solutions for users' IT problems and this is achieved with the help of other departments, such as:
- Network division,
- Hardware division,
- Software division.
The HelpDesk logs user enquiries, attempts to resolve the problem and, if it cannot, sends the problem request forms to the above divisions with full details of the user and the problem. These divisions then provide follow up support.
The HelpDesk duties are:
- Answer the phone from the user, create a request form and enter the enquiry into the HelpDesk system;
- Distribute the form to the support technicians;
- Collect the forms after problem resolution;
- Type a monthly report detailing the problems in each college.
