Dr. Khalifa Al Jabri
Professor and Head

Welcome. The Department of Civil Engineering was one of the four engineering departments formed in 1986 with the opening of Sultan Qaboos University.  It was renamed in May 2002 as the Department of Civil and Architectural Engineering with the introduction of a new program in Architectural Engineering.  We received our first batch of 17 students in the Architectural Engineering Program in 2004.

The Department offers two distinct undergraduate degrees in Civil Engineering and Architectural Engineering. Two streams in environmental and construction engineering are planned for the near future. It also offers two Master of Science degrees in general Civil Engineering and Civil Engineering (Water Resources).

Civil Engineering covers all facets of life and includes the planning, design and construction of buildings, hospitals, bridges, roads, pipelines, refineries, wastewater treatment plants, waste disposal facilities, and many others.  Civil engineers are also involved in the maintenance and rehabilitation of Civil Infrastructure Systems; environmental protection; and the use of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and Global Positioning Systems (GPS) in engineering projects.

We are proud of our students, faculty members, technicians and various laboratory and computer facilities.  Almost all of our students find employment in the public and private sectors within three months of graduation.  Many of our earlier graduates currently assume leadership positions in the public sector.

Our faculty members are graduates of well known universities in the USA, UK, Canada and Japan.  In addition to their teaching and service duties, they are involved in research projects of great significance to Oman and the region.  Our Industrial Advisory Board lends advice to the department on issues relevant to our degree plans, student training and professional development.

The Civil Engineering Program underwent a successful substantial equivalency accreditation visit in March 12-15, 2006 from the USA Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET). This is part of the Department’s and the College of Engineering commitment to continuous quality improvement. A planned accreditation visit of the Architectural Engineering Program is scheduled for Fall 2008.

The Department is witnessing a major expansion in laboratory space, equipment acquisition and students' intake (exceeds 80 students per year). This will hopefully position the Department at the forefront of research and postgraduate education for the 21st century.

We invite you to explore our website and we extend to you an invitation to visit our Department.
