Omanis throughout their history have paid great attention to plants as a renewable source of food: a vital element for town establishment and civilization and a major contributor to economic prosperity. Under the leadership of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos, it is viewed today as an important pillar of Oman's development and a rational approach towards food security and economic diversity.

The Department of Crop Sciences was established as a foundation core unit of the College of Agricultural and Marine Sciences. The objectives of the Department are: (i) To train students in the subjects of agronomy, horticulture, entomology and plant pathology; (ii) To conduct research and guide students in various projects in production, management and improvements of crops; (iii) To advise students on academic improvement and career development; and (iv) To conduct extension and field tours in different agro-climatic regions.
