 Background

Language Centre FORUM first appeared during the spring semester of 1999 and was, in some ways, similar to the LC Newsletter in that it published news of events held during the preceding semester, though it also published short fiction, poetry and articles concerning education.

The second edition, spring 2000, began to include more 'academic' articles, though poems and short fiction continued to be published, as did contributions from students and accounts of LC trips. After the second edition, however, it was decided that 'newsworthy' items were no longer viable: the time lapse between such events and the appearance of the magazine rendered such articles 'yesterday's news'. The editorial board proposed that LC Forum take an entirely different direction, the aim now being to go 'academic' and to provide a journal that would raise the professional awareness of LC staff and people outside the Language Centre and indeed provide a 'forum' for academic discussion.

Publications Team

The Publication Unit at present consists of the following:

Badria Al Aweiny
Robert Gear
Farial Ahmed
Angelin Victor
Neil McBeath
Duane Daniels
Angeline Victor
Ali Al Zefeiti

Editor-in-Chief: Dr Rahma, Director, the Language Centre
Editor and Publications Coordinator: Mike Ramsden

The publications currently ‘on the table’ include:

  1. The Gazette – which at the moment is supposed to reflect what is going on in the LC. The aim is to bond or bring together or involve the great multiplicity of nationalities in the LC
  2. A publication comprising academic issues and more extended writings – though not full-blown research papers. The aim is to foster the LC as both research and teaching establishment.
  3. A publication comprising more creative (we are not saying academic is not creative) or artistic or philosophical writing. Aim – act as a showcase and ‘outlet’ for creative talent in the LC.
  4. Numbers 2 and 4 might comprise one journal such as we had in the last issues of Forum.
  5. There is also Pursuing Excellence, which I am sure you have seen and members might be invited to help with this.
  6. The Proceedings of the last conference 2008 are presently being prepared and two other people apart from myself are working on the proceedings.
  7. The ELT Conference handbook, including the abstracts of the papers to be presented at the next conference.
These publications need to be finalised. News will appear on this website as it is known.
