Arabic is the national language of this nation, the symbol of its unity and identity, and a component of its heritage and intellectual production. That is why teaching and developing it is an essential requirement that has been destined by the bound between Arabs and their language. The importance of Arabic has been reflected in His Majesty’s vision through his instructions to an international level, His Majesty gave financial grants to some top universities, such as Cambridge University, Oxford University, Harvard University, Beijing University, Melbourne University and George Town University, in order to establish “Sultan Qaboos Chair for Arabic Studies”. At a local level, His Majesty’s care for Arabic starts with making it the official language of the Sultanate. In addition, he gives constant instructions on enhancing and developing it in the University by using the modern techniques of this era.
According to this, the Department of Arabic Language takes the responsibility to serve this language through teaching it, doing research and enriching it. Since its inception in 1987, the department has been working hard on developing its programs to reach the needs of the Omani society and meet the standards of the modern sciences and knowledge around the world. The Department started its mission by establishing the Bachelor program, followed by the Master’s program and finally the PhD program. It also plans to establish Diploma programs that are required in the market place through use of its multiple experiences and scientific qualifications.
