Studying "history: at university level is a necessity, because it is one of the pillars of "Culture" and national identity in every society.
In 1993 the department of history became an independent department with its own special programs which provides outstanding historical information in ancient, Islamic and modern history.
The department major goal is to graduate qualified historians who can undertake historical research, and engage in other studies which require knowledge of history. The common teaching methods applied in the department are: lectures, research projects and presentations using modern educational media. In addition students are taken on field trips to archaeological sites and scientific institutions and foundations, museums and libraries inside and some time out side the sultanate.
The department is entrusted with teaching a university requirement subject entitled "History of Oman and studies in Islamic civilization", as well as college requirement subject entitled "Introduction to History and Civilization".
The department offers a major program in history, as well as a minor programs which includes subjects in history for other departments in the college of Arts and social sciences, and to the college of education.
The department of history also offers an M.A. program in Islamic and Modern history, and will soon starts a new PhD. program in both fields: Islamic and modem history.
