Pathology department is one of the most active departments in college of medicine in Sultan Qaboos University. It takes part in the B.Sc. Health Sciences (4th year), MD (5th, 6th, and 7th year), and the B.Sc. MLS teaching and training programs. It also participates in the OMSB postgraduate medical training programs in pathology and other medical specialties. With the commencement of the New Curriculum for medical students, general pathology is taught in the second year in the pathobiology course and special pathology in all the system courses that follow. BSc. MLS students take several courses in pathology. The courses include applied medical laboratory science, cellular pathology I and II, biology of cancer, advanced instrument in cellular pathology. In addition to its academic activities, the department offers specialized diagnostic histo­pathology, cytology, immuno­pathology, enzymehistochemistry and electron microscopy services for the SQU Hospital. It also functions as a referral center for the Ministry of Health and other hospitals in the Sultanate. The department is registered and subscribes to international External Quality Assurance programs in cytopathology, immunohistochemistry, renal pathology and anatomical pathology including a technical module. The postgraduate training program is accepted for part fulfillment of requirements for the Membership of the Royal College of Pathologists examination.
