The Programme:

A total of seven weeks made up as follows:

2 weeks’ placement in Salalah’s polyclinics/health centers. Objectives include :

  • understanding health needs of community

  • developing confidence and skills to work semi-independently

  • participating in health education

  • learning about organization and management of health care at this center designing and running a small project

3½ weeks supervised family medicine clinical experience alternating between Seeb/Mabella/Al-Khod/SQU Health Centres. Afternoon seminars on FAMCO topics (Saturday, Sunday, Monday) plus each student required to spend a minimum of two evenings in SQUH A&E Dept. (attending FAMCO morning meeting is mandatory).

1 week at Ministry of Health, Dept. of Family & Community Medicine, programmes including disease surveillance and preventive medicine teams, made up of one day’s orientation followed by four days of fieldwork.  Details on a separate sheet.

Final Week comprising of a three-day written and oral examinations and lastly, a morning set aside for presentations in your sub-groups of the outreach placement experiences.

 

Assessment:

           made up as follows :

1.  Continuous assessment - according to parameters in logbook, in each phase your supervisors at the clinical sites will be assessing you and recording attendance.  (25% total)

2.  Written reports and/or diaries - format is flexible, can be a day-today record or a summary of experiences, but should contain: list of patients/conditions, details of more interesting patients (one per day is suggested), description of varied experiences, analysis of health problems and suggestions for improvement, comments on effect on yourself of these health attachments, and details of your project. These  reports should cover the 3 weeks’ outreach.  (20% total)

3.  MEQ (Written Paper) 15%

4.  End of rotation clinical OSCE examination - this also serves as a practice for the  type of exam used by FAMCO in the final MD examinations. You will be given more details about this during the rotation.  (40% of total)
