      The department is a tertiary care center accepting all high-risk obstetric patients from all over Oman. The neonatal unit is equipped with 4 ventilators and able to resuscitate babies from 26 weeks gestation. Out patients departments for regular antenatal clinic, high-risk clinic (IUGR and diabetes), Infertility clinic with facilities for intrauterine insemination and Colposcopy clinics for pre invasive disease. Epidural analgesia for pain relief is available for laboring patients on 24-hour basis.

The labor suite has 10 laboring rooms (6 functional) with all modern gadgets.

The postnatal ward has 24 beds and 12 beds in the gynecology and 4 beds for the antenatal patients.

All routine major and minor gynecology surgeries are offered to patients including hysteroscopy,and laparoscopy. Gyne onclogy surgeries followed by chemotherapy in collaboration with medical oncologist is also available.

During 2002 there have been 2551 deliveries, which is an increase of 13.70 % compared with the year 2001. Total number of Obstetrics admissions was 5423 (an increase of 13.3 %) with bed occupancy of 77 %.

Total number of admissions to gynecology ward was 1202, with bed occupancy of 71.2 %. We performed 648 surgeries during 2002.

The number of patients seen in outpatient clinic was 16939 – a decrease of 11 % compared to the last year.

331 patients were admitted to day care unit (an increase of 27.3 %). The total perinatal mortality rate was 11.2 per 1000 and perinatal mortality rate corrected for gross congenital anomalies was 8.8 per 1000, which is better than in 2001 (12.3 per 1000 and 9.2 per 1000 respectively).
