Introduction 

The Careers Capability Program is a flexible non–credit program comprising career education workshops, and work related activities. Students completing the program will be awarded a University Certificate of Participation, and may receive employer prizes. The program is recommended for all students, no matter what their degree disciplines and career interests. 

Program Aims 

To help students improve their competitiveness in the graduate job market by:

  • Better understanding themselves, and their capabilities;
  • Developing the knowledge, self reliance, key skills and other capabilities essential for a successful working life;
  • Gaining useful vacation experience. 

Program Structure 

The Careers Capability Program has two parts; the core must be completed by all students, the optional second part, comprises skills enhancing workshops. 

1 Core Program

Section A - Students must successfully complete the tasks indicated below:

  • Write a C.V., a cover letter; and complete a sample application form;
  • Submit three job descriptions related to their field of study;
  • Practise/attend a mock interview.

Section B - Students must complete three of the following tasks:

  • Work experience - as part of an academic degree program (an internship);
  • Work experience - a formal vacation scheme with an employer (may be voluntary work);
  • Work experience - on the University campus;
  • Study of a foreign language or computing skills during the summer  vacation;
  • Writing an original essay about the labour market;
  • Writing an original essay about transferable/personal (graduate) skills.

Job Applications
Presentation Skills
Meetings Management
Time and Task Management

Types of Correspondence

Plus many other activities, including on-campus employer presentations. 

Getting Your University Certificate of Participation 

Each program element is worth a number of points; students must achieve at least 100 points to be awarded their certificate. The table indicates the points breakdown:
