Sultan Qaboos University has a moral, ethical and legal duty to ensure compliance with national and international standards regarding Health, Safety and Environmental Protection. Therefore, the University through out Safety Engineering Section and Safety Committees will perform all its activities in such a manner so as to:

  • Ensure sound health and safety of all employees, students, visitors and contractors and all others who are associated with its activities directly or indirectly.
  •  
  • Protect environment, prevent pollution and create safe working atmosphere.

Responsibilities:

  1. Comply with SQU Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) Policy.
  2. Responsible for the Safety tours, inspections and supervision of work permits and especially excavation and road cuttings.
  3. Inspection of project sites to ensure that all health and safety measures are in place and in practice.
  4. Ensuring use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) by SQU Staff and Contractors.
  5. Educating SQU Staff and Contractors' workers at SQU to use safety equipment while performing critical & hazardous works.
  6. Inspect and audit the quality and safety of plant, equipment and vehicles of the contractors at SQU.
  7. Ensure that regular audit, monitoring, and maintenance of SQU and Contractors equipment, facilities and stores meet Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) standards.
  8. Ensure strict control of hazardous substances and safe handling and disposal of waste material.
  9. Ensure that approved programmes of accident prevention and emergency evacuation are in place.
  10. Work with the College/Department/ Centers Safety Committees to provide active leadership in fire prevention, fire fighting and to advise and make appropriate recommendations and monitor compliance with rules and regulations pertaining to fire hazards/safety in SQU.
  11. Preparation of Safety Reports to the Director of the Technical Affairs Department.
  12. Report all accidents / near misses and prepare initial incident reports for submittal to the Director of the Technical Affairs Department.
  13. Preparation, implementation and monitoring the HSE plans and HSE procedures in all Technical Affairs Department Tender Documents.
  14. Ensuring effective design and implementation of different safety training programs.
  15. Coordinate the HSE activities of Technical Affairs Department and participation in SQU Safety Committee, Emergency Committee, safety meetings and safety assessments.
  16. Participate in programs to enhance HSE awareness in SQU.
  17. Participate/Lead SQU HSE accident/incident investigations as requested.
  18. Audit areas of performance in safety, safety training, fire protection, emergency response, record keeping, procedures, inspections, safety meetings, incident reporting and investigation.
  19. Develop a Questionnaire for staff and student feedback in terms of HSE.
  20. Develop and implement HSE measures to Lead SQU to zero injury and zero environmental impacts.
