Overview

This symposium addresses a variety of issues in English language teaching research. It serves as a forum for an exchange of ideas among scholars and practitioners about the challenges and opportunities in conducting research in teaching English as a foreign language. The symposium is an event for researchers and practitioners to share their insights and experiences. The participants will benefit from discussions about cutting-edge research and will enhance their understanding of the connection between research and successful English language teaching and learning. The symposium features plenary presentations, concurrent sessions and roundtable discussions.
 
Symposium Objectives

The symposium aims at:
  • Raising awareness about the potential for ELT research in Oman
  • Promoting and sustaining good quality research in ELT in Oman
  • Showing how research in ELT can raise the quality of teaching and learning
  • Encouraging discussion among professionals interested in research in the different fields of ELT
  • Fostering communication and cooperation between ELT providers in the private and public sectors in the area of ELT research
  • Presenting and sharing research practices and findings
 
Symposium Topics

The symposium will focus on two main areas: doing academic research and reporting research findings. The presentations/workshops should address one or more of the sub-topics below:
  • Theoretical and empirical research in ELT
  • Qualitative and quantitative research in ELT
  • Classroom based/action research
  • Maintaining quality in research
  • Networking and collaboration in ELT research
  • Research in ELT as a social practice
  • ELT research resources in Oman
  • Prejudices about ELT research
  • Challenges in conducting ELT research in global and local contexts
  • ELT research: current trends and future perspectives
  • Encouraging and sustaining ELT research in Oman
  • Incorporating research findings into curricular and assessment practices in Oman
  • Validity and reliability issues in research practices and procedures
  • Cutting-edge research findings
  • Bridging the gap between research and English language teaching and learning practices
  • Research as a tool for professional development

Call for papers

Presentation proposals related to symposium topics are invited. Proposals are due by 30th December 2009 and should be e-mailed as a Word document to Dr Saleh Al-Busaidi at asad@squ.edu.om. All proposals should be sent using the symposium Presentation Proposal Form and e-mailed by the deadline.
