The Humanities Research center was founded in 2004 according to the executive decree of SQU no. 123/2004. However, it began its activities in 2010.

The executive summary of the decree states:

“Due to the rapid and turbulent global challenges that effect the Sultanate’s infra-structure, necessitating adjustments to its economy, social life, education, and its commercial and business practices; indeed these changes impact upon every aspect of its normal day-to-day way of life. These challenges mean there is now a pressing need for the development of effective responses and polices to assist decision-makers in every sphere of Omani life. This was stipulated by guiding pronouncements of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos for SQU to become a powerhouse of ideas and expertise to meet the rising expectations of Omani citizens, and responds to the demands of public and private institutions. In response to these issues, a collaborative venture is being proposed for the founding of “the Humanities Research center” (HRC)”.
