Festival Focusses on Latest Technologies in Agriculture

The ninth Scientific Agriculture Festival organized by the Agricultural & Marine Sciences Society at Sultan Qaboos University commenced on 26 March under the patronage of Hon. Dr. Hamed bin Sulaiman Al Salmi, member of the State Council, and a faculty at the College of Education. The festival, focusing on the theme “Agro tech” will last for three days.
Speaking at the opening Ceremony, Dr. Omar Salem Al-Jabri, Assistant Dean for Training and Community Service at the College of Agricultural & Marine Sciences, said that besides teaching and scientific research, the college plays an important role in raising awareness about agricultural and marine science related issues as they are vital for the society in ensuring food security in the region. “There are six different departments in the college, which offer ten different majors in bachelors, masters and doctoral programs. The Agriculture and Marine Sciences Society was established with sub groups related to each major”. Dr. Omar said that the main aim for establishing students' groups at the university is to shed light on the role that university plays in improving the society inside and outside the university. “Moreover, such groups give the students a chance to gain skills in various fields related to the subjects they study”, he said. 
The festival focuses on the correlation between agriculture and marine sciences sectors and technology. It discusses issues related to the latest technologies in the agricultural and marine sciences, besides the future thoughts about technologies to be used by humans in developing the farming and fisheries sectors. The exhibition displays student projects from all the departments in the college. Overall, the festival focuses on displaying the importance of agriculture in the economy of Oman through workshops, discussions, and scientific forums.
