Programme Title:
Master of Arts in International Relations and Security Studies (IRSS)

Certification:
It is a part time program that awards a Master’s degree in international relations and security studies with the option of specialisation in the following areas:
Master of Arts in International Relations and Security Studies (International Relations),
Master of Arts in International Relations and Security Studies (Security Studies),

 

Vision:
To provide a programme that is academically rigorous, professionally-oriented and relevant for future practitioners in the field of international relations and security studies.

Mission:
To produce Omani professionals who can observe, review, evaluate and perform (both empirically and conceptually) in the field of international relations and security studies and play a prominent role both in Oman and the region.


Objectives:
The main objectives of this programme are to produce specialist graduates of high calibre in inter-national relations and security studies to meet the needs of the Sultanate of Oman and the region in these areas. By the end of the programme the students will be able to:
Identify principal paradigms and the major theories used in the study of international relations and security studies.
Identify and describe the major processes in the international system including globalization, integration, and the causes of conflict both at the international level and in the Middle East.
Apply theoretical frameworks to understand practical international relations and security studies issues.
Master communication, negotiation and persuasion skills to craft presentations, construct arguments and articulate rigorous debates in international relations and security studies.
Operate both in government and private service with the ability to work with experts both nationally and internationally

The entrance requirements for this programme are:

  • a bachelor’s degree with a GPA of at least 2.5
  • 2 year work experience and
  • a score of 6.0 on IELTS, 547 on TOEFL Paper, 210 on TOEFL CBT or 78 on TOEFL iBT
    or (IELTS 6.5 = TOEFL paper = 550 = TOEFL CBT = 213 = TOEFL iBT = 79)

The M.A. in International Relations and Security Studies is a multidisciplinary course that embraces elements of varied disciplines like economics, political science, law, philosophy, sociology, etc. Thus, the curriculum is derived from all these disciplines.

The curriculum will, thus, consist of a compulsory core of 6 courses followed by an option of choosing 2 out of a pool of 8 electives in one of the two available specializations. This will be followed by research leading to a thesis. All courses are 3 credits hours. The course description is given below:
