Chair of Program,
Dr. Nasser Hosseinzadeh
Welcome to the Mechatronics Engineering (MCE) Program, jointly offered by the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) and Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (MIE) at Sultan Qaboos University (SQU). The program started with the 2002 students’ intake.
The program was designed in line with the College of Engineering mission of continuous strive for excellence and to fulfill the needs of human resources for the country's industrialization process in the coming decades in an increasingly competitive world.
Recent industrial needs in the areas of smart oil wells, automation, intelligent measurement and monitoring systems necessitate the need for this engineering discipline. In addition, the newly emerging industries in the Sultanate are bound to have Mechatronics-based systems since its inception. The goal of the program in Mechatronics Engineering is to integrate mechanical, electrical and computer engineering into a meaningful program so as to produce engineers that are conversant with all of the relevant technologies needed by the present and future industries of Oman.
Therefore, at SQU, the Mechatronics Engineering is defined as a synergistic combination of Mechanical Engineering, Electronics, Robotics, and Computer Systems. A typical Mechatronics system is characterized by close integration of the mechanical components (e.g. mechanical links, gears, motors, drive trains, etc.) electrical sensors (e.g. sensors for position, speed, light and temperature measurement), mechanical and electrical actuators (e.g. electrical motors, hydraulic cylinders and flow control valves) and computer controllers (e.g. custom-built controllers, personal computers, programmable logic controllers (PLC's), and digital signal processors) into products and systems useful to man and society. In order to integrate all these elements in an optimal way, engineers must have insight into each of these disciplines.
The MCE program is accredited by the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET).
