Histology/Cytology Core Facility (Pathology)

The Histology/Cytology Core Facility (HCCF) is a full service and support laboratory that is well equipped to promote research, teaching and training in various disciplines related to histology or cytology.

The HCCF is located in the Department of Pathology (Room #1057)

Saturday through Wednesday from 8:00 am – 4:00 pm. Arrangements can be made for holidays and after working hours to meet investigator’s needs, by contacting Dr. Khalaf Al Gharibi.

Laboratory

There are two components to the HCCF:

  1. Histology laboratory for sectioning and staining.
  2. The Cytology laboratory

HCCF provides routine histology processing (including paraffin embedding  and sectioning), and access to several microscopic platforms. HCCF will also provide technical assistance, training, and consultation in histological and cytological  techniques. For research the HCCF will  provide assistance with research projects for the College of Medicine & Health Sciences, other colleges within SQU as well as for governmental and private research centers within the country.

      HCCF provides the following services:

  • Preparing protocols to respond to the investigator’s needs
  • Paraffin  embedding
  • Cutting paraffin blocks
  •  Hematoxylin and Eosin staining
  • Special stains
  • Decalcify bone/tissue
  •  Pap method cytological techniques
  • Providing technical assistance
  • Providing technical assistance and hands on training for the investigators
  • Maintaining the equipment in the Lab
  • Investigators should consult core facility staff to seek technical and scientific expertise for a better design of their study.
  • After the work request is completed, and/or accepted, constructive discussions with the technical staff are also encouraged.
  • All remaining specimens, slides, digital image files and prints will be returned to the investigator for safekeeping when the work is completed. Archiving these materials and accessing them for later work is important, and it is the investigator’s responsibility.
  • Each received request form will be given an identifying number, essential for tracking purposes, encoding the date the work was received, and the principal investigator involved. HCCF must keep a record of the work performed under this number in case it is needed in the future.
  • Specimens should be handed directly to the Biomedical Scientists in-charge, accompanied by a written work order.
  • Each and every single specimen submitted must have a unique identification name or number which cannot be confused with existing materials. This is the investigator’s responsibility.
  • Amendment to the projected work will usually require a new request form.
