OVERVIEW
The Child Health Department is one of the pioneering departments of the College of Medicine and Health Sciences (COM&HS) and SQU Hospital (SQUH). The department accounts for more than a third of total SQUH admissions and provides exemplary patient care from birth to adolescence, encompassing all sub-specialties. It also plays a major role to achieve excellence in all aspects of child health care in the country and the community.
Academically, the department has well-developed undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training programs in collaboration other local and international educators and institutions to share the latest information and best practice. Department members are actively involved in all educational activities and committees of the College of Medicine and have contributed significantly towards the development and implementation of Medical College curriculum. Further, the department provides trainings and activities to foreign undergraduate medical students during their elective rotations.
The department has also a highly-integrated postgraduate training programme and is equipped with excellent Clinical Teaching Units (CTU’s) run by experienced medical doctors as lecturers. The Child Health Department started the first CTU in Oman and has been complimented by various international medical educationists and accreditation agencies. Various departments have followed thereafter.
The department is a training site for pediatric residency under the Oman Medical Specialty Board (OMSB). It also teaches and trains junior doctors, preparing them for various examinations affiliated to the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (UK), Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow and the Arab Board.
The Department of Child Health has an impressive research portfolio with various completed and on-going projects. The members of the Department have disseminated their research findings in both national and international forums.
It is our vision for the Department of Child Health to continue to play a leading role in the region in the areas of teaching, research, and patient care as we strive to achieve excellence in delivering high quality and patient-centered clinical care. It is dedicated to the improvement of health of all children in all aspects of child healthcare in the country and the community.
