Clinical Services

GENERAL RADIOLOGY
This section includes general radiography and fluoroscopy and it is one of the busiest sections in the department. This section is also responsible for performing some dedicated fluoroscopic examination of the upper and lower GI tract and urinary system.

MAMMOGRAPHY
Mammography Service provides individually tailored comprehensive evaluation for the early detection and diagnosis of breast diseases. The service offers state-of-the-art dedicated breast imaging modalities which include full field digital mammography, dedicated breast ultrasound and stereotactic-guided biopsy.  Ultrasound-guided interventional procedures such as ultrasound-guided biopsies, hook wire localizations, fine-needle aspiration cytology and clip placements are some of the other procedures that are also provided.

A “One-stop Breast Clinic” is held once a week in collaboration with surgeons and pathologists.  The aim is to achieve a diagnosis and management of plan for each patient at the initial outpatient visit.  One-stop clinic allows optimum patient management, minimizes anxiety associated with symptomatic breast disease and maximizes hospital utilization of hospital outpatient resources.  The patient is thus able to have her clinical exam, radiology imaging, biopsy, and pathology results all on the same day.

A Multi-disciplinary Team (MDT) meeting is held every Tuesday allowing key professionals from surgery, pathology, medical oncology, and radiology to jointly discuss individual breast cancer patients and contribute independently to clinical decisions.

NUCLEAR MEDICINE
The Molecular Imaging Section has state of the art hybrid imaging modalities. The PET-CT serves primarily the oncology patients but also performs cardiac and neurology PET /CT scans. The Department has a hybrid Single Photon Emission Tomography and Computerized Tomography 16-slices (SPECT/CT).  It has improved the accuracy of the diagnosis and decrease time of examination in many types of studies as Myocardial Perfusion for the detection of Coronary Arteries Disease.

The section has long experience with radionuclide therapy where Thyroid cancer and Thyrotoxicosis patients are treated with Radioactive Iodine.  In addition, patients are also treated with Yttrium 90 for chronic synovitis.

VASCULAR & INTERVENTIONAL RADIOLOGY
The Interventional Radiology Section has state of the art Angiography suite ( the Philips Clarity System FD 20/20).  The Interventional Radiology Room is the first hybrid suite in Oman.
The Section provides service including Interventional Oncology (including TACE and TARE), Peripheral Vascular Disease, trauma embolization, GIT embolization, drainage, biopsies, and Transplant Interventions.

ULTRASOUND
Examinations include abdominal ultrasound, pelvis ultrasound, Breast Ultrasounds, Obstetrics and gynecology ultrasound, MSK ultrasound, ultrasound-guided interventional procedures and portable ultrasound examinations. The Section performs certain specialized Ultrasound and Doppler examinations which include Trans-cranial Doppler Imaging (TCDI), Shear Wave velocity, and Elasticity imaging of the liver.

COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY:

This Section supports the known busy Oncology and Trauma services in the Hospital, in addition to the other medical and surgical services (Adults and Pediatrics) . The Section performs specialized examination such as CT Coronary angiography, CT peripheral angiography, CT perfusion of the brain, and CT colonography.

MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING:

This Section has 1.5 Tesla MRI scanner (Aera, Siemens) and 3 Tesla MRI scanner (Vida, Siemens). Full range of MRI examinations are performed including certain specialized exams such as MRI breast, perfusion studies, contrast enhanced and Non -contrast Angiography and Cardiac MRI. The Section has dedicated day for Pediatric examinations to be performed under general Anesthesia

QUALITY MANAGEMENT
The purpose of the quality management section is to ensure that policies and procedures are in place to optimize the performance and safety of equipment and personnel. The quality management team ensure continuation of patient care and safety, and have indicators in place to monitor and document relevant processes and procedures which requires improvement.
