Postgraduate Diploma

  • Applicant must be an undergraduate degree holder from Sultan Qaboos University, or any other recognized Institution in a field related to the program applied for.
  • Applicant for postgraduate diploma in translation must have a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of not less than 2.5 on a 4.00 point scale or equivalent. The Deanship of Postgraduate Studies will make the assessment for equivalency acceptance.( some programs may require a specific cumulative GPA)
  • English Certificate must be submitted before the translation test, achieve band (6.5) in IELTS Academic, or (90) in the TOEFL through the Internet.
  • Applicant must submit a release letter or a study leave from employer for full-time study or no-objection letter for part-time study, addressed to the Dean of Postgraduate Studies at SQU.  Unemployed applicant needs to submit a statement from The Public Authority of Manpower Register documenting the unemployment status of the applicant.
  • Completion of any other specific program requirements.

 

Masters Programs

  • Applicant must be an undergraduate degree holder from Sultan Qaboos University, or any other recognized Institution in a field related to the program applied for.
  • A Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of not less than 2.75 on a 4.00 point scale or equivalent. The Deanship of Postgraduate Studies will make the assessment for equivalency acceptance.
  • Applicant with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) between 2.5 and 2.74 on a 4.0 point scale or its equivalent with a minimum of two years of work experience or any other academic activity following graduation.
  • Applicant must submit an English Proficiency Test Certificate with the level required for the program applied for, provided that the test date is less than two years from the date of the announcement.
  • Applicant must submit a release letter or a study leave from employer for full-time study or no-objection letter for part-time study, addressed to the Dean of Postgraduate Studies at SQU.  Unemployed applicant needs to submit a statement from The Public Authority of Manpower Register documenting the unemployment status of the applicant.
  • Completion of any other specific program requirements.

 

Doctoral Programs

  • Applicant must be a master’s degree holder, from Sultan Qaboos University, or any other recognized Institution in a field related to the program applied for, and must be a Bachelor degree from a  recognized university.
  • A Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of not less than 3.00 on a 4.00 point scale or equivalent. The Deanship of Postgraduate Studies will make the assessment for equivalency acceptance.
  • Applicant with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) between 2.75 and 2.99 on a 4.0 point scale may be considered for admission subject with a minimum of two years of work experience  and any other academic activity.
  • Applicant must submit a statement on objectives and goals of the research proposed.
  • Two recommendation letters from academics attesting to the applicant’s competence in the discipline of interest and also to their research capability.
  • Applicant must submit a release letter or a study leave from employer for full-time study or no-objection letter for part-time study, addressed to the Dean of Postgraduate Studies at SQU.  Unemployed applicant needs to submit a statement from The Public Authority of Manpower Register documenting the unemployment status of the applicant.
  • Applicant must submit an English Proficiency Test Certificate with the level required for the program applied for, provided that the test date is less than two years from the date of the announcement. 
  • Completion of any other specific program requirements.

Qualifications Equivalence
 Applicants must upload the attested academic certificates and certificate equivalence if it is issued outside the Sultanate of Oman by Ministry of Higher Education in Oman for Omani and non-Omani applicants through their website
www.mohe.gov.om


Academic Certificate
Applicant must have a degree from Sultan Qaboos University, or any other recognized institution in a field related to the program applied for.

 

English language is a prerequisite for postgraduate studies in SQU. Where language of instruction is English and Arabic, post-graduate diploma, master's and doctoral programs required evidence of the minimum English proficiency for admission. Proof of English proficiency must be demonstrated by either:

  • IELTS Academic: International English Language Testing System.
  • Internet-Based TOEFL( iBT): Test Of English as a Foreign Language.
     

Please Note:

  • The English language requirements may vary between programs, you can check English requirement for each program from program details.
  • Test scores are valid for 2 years from the test date until the date of the announcement. 
  • Institutional TOEFL test is not acceptable
  • The University reserves the right to withdraw any offer of admission if an applicant fails to meet the minimum English language requirements for the program to which he or she has applied.

Waiver of English Language Proficiency Requirements:

  • Candidates whose mother language is English are exempt from English language requirement. 
  • Candidates can be exempted from doctoral English requirement in programs taught in English if a master degree with these requirements has been completed not more than two years from the date of application.

Documents needed:  Applicants for Postgraduates Programs must upload the following documents electronically into the online application system. (PDF or JPG formats only)

1. Attested Degree Certificate: 

For PhD programs, a Master Degree and Bachelor Degree Certificates are required

For Master and Postgraduate Diploma program, a Bachelor degree is required
 

2. Attested Official Transcripts:
For PhD programs, Master Degree transcript is required
For Master and Postgraduate Diploma programs, Bachelor degree transcript is required
The grade classification key which can be found at the back of the official transcript must be submitted.


3. Curriculum Vitae (CV): It must shows personal information, current employment details and previous experience.
4. English Proficiency Test Certificate: Applicant must submit an (IELTS) Academic, or (IBT) TOEFL international test results with the required level for the program applied for, provided that the test date is not less than two years from the date of the application submission period. (Test results must be submitted before 1/8/2020, except for the translation program which requires the English Proficiency Test Certificate to be submitted before sitting for the written test).
5. Passport: (Visa copy must be shown for non-Omani resident applicants).
6. Identification Card or Residency Card.
7. A Study Leave from employer: For full-time study and part-time study, a no-objection letter must be submitted and addressed to the Dean of Postgraduate Studies at SQU.  Unemployed applicants must submit a statement from The Public Authority of Manpower Register, which states that they are unemployed. (can be submitted before 1/8/2020)
8. A Personal Photo, with blue or white background.
9. (PhD Applicants only) A proposal that explains applicants' research topic, research problem, objectives, questions and method of data collection. 
10. (PhD Applicants only) Two recommendation letters from academics attesting to the applicant’s competence in the discipline of interest and their research capability.

  • All applicants in Postgraduate programs are required to pay a 10 Omani Riyals application fee or its equivalent in US dollars payed electronically as part of the application submission procedures.
  • The application will not be processed if it is not completed or not paid.

Please note: Application fees are non –refundable even if the application is either rejected or cancelled.

Meeting the required Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) is one of the critical application requirements for the postgraduate programs at Sultan Qaboos University. The University uses a grading classification system that consists of four points-scale. Since that many academic institutions do not use this system, candidates with degrees that do not follow the four points scale should submit a certificate equivalency request by clicking the link below.
Note that the equivalency result will be as following and no numbers will be given:
        1. Fulfilled the GPA requirement for application and competing for University scholarships.
        2. Fulfilled the GPA requirement for application only.
        3. GPA requirement is not met.

Remarks:

  • All fees are in Omani riyals (1RO=2.60 US Dollars).
  • Tuition fees for postgraduate programs can be paid all at once per semester.
  • All tuition fees for courses/thesis are calculated according to the registered credit hours in that semester.
  • All quoted fees are NOT subject to reduction.
  • Tuition fees do not include the costs of bridging courses or application fees.
  • There will be additional fees for any extra registered courses. Calculation of fees depends on the credit hour fees that a student registers.
  • Tuition fees for programs with the thesis option include an embedded payment of no more than three taught courses if the study requires the registration of taught courses.
  • In the case of repeating any course, the student is required to pay for the course repeated.
  • The student is obliged to pay the full amount of tuition fees even if he/she completed the degree before the official duration of the program ends.
  • There will be 50 Omani Riyals payment for every semester extended after the official duration of the study.
  • Tuition fees for MBA and Law programs differ from all of the MSc programs in other colleges.

1.The electronic payment period is specified in the course registration announcement for the semester. In case of non-payment with the specified period:

  • Cohort before 2018, the student is prohibited from completing any academic procedure until full fees are paid.
  • Cohort 2018 and beyond, students will be considered to have unofficially withdrawn from the university and their enrollment will be terminated in case of fail to pay tuition fees .

2. Students receiving funding from external sponsors must submit a letter of funding from the sponsor to the Section of Tuition Fees in order to finalize their procedures in the electronic system.

3. After confirming the completion of the withdrawal of the amount from the student’s account and not updating the payment in the student information system, please refer to the section to verify the update of the data.Refund procedures for eligible students (Postponed/withdrawn/drop course) will be made after the end of drop with W period.

Important Notes:

  • Applicants who meet the admission requirements will be required to go through the evaluation process according to the procedures in the Departments and Colleges.
  • All certificates and transcripts must be attested.
  • Applicants are not allowed to apply for a program from which they have been dismissed, unless the date of dismissal was more than two years before the application.
  • Applicants who are in the last semester of study can apply to another program only if they provide proof of the expected graduation date that is before the start of the study. Failure to achieve the required CGAP at the time of graduation will result in revoking the admission. 
  • Admitted candidate can be given an unconditional offer if all requirements are met or conditional offer if English, release or no-objection letter requirements will subsequently be fulfilled before 1/8/2020 to join the program in the first semester.
  • Applicants can apply for more than one program by creating an account for each program they wish to apply. Cases of conflicts in dates and times of tests and interviews between the programs will be taken into consideration (Except for College of Law).
  • Incomplete Application that do not meet admission requirements will not be considered.
  • Receipt of an application by the Deanship of Postgraduate Studies does not guarantee the accepting the candidate in the program.
  • The University reserves the right not to offer a program, if there are insufficient number of applicants.
  • The University reserves the right to withdraw the admission if any applicant fails to meet any of the requirements within the specified period in the admission notification and if the applicants found violating any predetermined conditions regardless of the reasons, test results, and interviews.
  • Applicants in the various programs will be subject to all regulation and decisions that will be issued before the beginning of the academic years 2020/2021
  • Accepted candidate must have their attested academic documents and qualifications equivalence by Ministry of Higher Education in Oman through their website www.mohe.gov.om before starting their study in the first semester. If the procedures of the approval takes some time by the Ministry, applicants must submit the attested academic documents and qualifications equivalence before they start of registration for the second semester; otherwise, the admission acceptance and registration of the applicant will be canceled.
  • If conditionally admitted candidate fails to meet the requirement by 1/8/2020, the University has the right to defer the admission to the second semester in 2020/2021 or cancel the admission. 
  • Candidates admitted conditionally into the Master program by taking bridging courses must fulfill the Master program English requirement as specified in the program description before starting the bridging courses with conditions shown on the academic regulation for postgraduate studies 2018.
  • Admitted candidates in programs offered in English who get English level 5.5 in IELTS or 69 in TOEFL can take an English language course during the first semester before registering for a Master program and should pass it.
  • Admitted candidates in programs offered in English who get English level 6.0 in IELTS or 79 in TOEFL can take an English language course during the first semester before registering for PhD program and should pass it.
  • Admitted student in the program who fulfills the scholarship requirements is not automatically granted a scholarship.
  • Admitted candidates in postgraduate programs automatically compete for the University scholarships for Omanis and Non-Omanis, and sponsored scholarships for Omanis. For more information, please visit Deanship's website.
