Center for Environmental Studies and Research (CESAR)

Since its inauguration in 2000, CESAR was the hub of environmental basic and strategic research at Sultan Qaboos University, and the gateway for faculty and student to the latest innovation in their fields. In February 2016, the Center for Environmental Studies and Research (CESAR) move in a new period of organization, and a new research clusters initiative has been launched. The program supports groups of researcher organized to address interdisciplinary environmental problem in partnership with researcher from different colleges and centers. The clusters have been organized around five interdisciplinary collaborative research initiatives that can serve as bridges between Sultan Qaboos University and off-campus communities:

1- Ecosystems Sustainability

2- Climate Change and Atmospheric Sciences 

3- Environmental Pollution 

4- Environmental Hazards 

5- Urban Sprawl and Green Initiatives 

Each research cluster is led by a Research Leader with the support of a research coordinator from CESAR. These clusters which involve faculty and students from across departments and colleges, will offer Sultan Qaboos University pillars of research activity that will keep CESAR grant-competitive and innovative.

Welcome to the Centre of Environmental Studies and Research (CESAR), Sultan Qaboos University.  CESAR was founded in 2000 to address the complex human and environmental challenges of the 21st century. CESAR has a talented staff with a mix of scientific and technical skills. The Center’s future will focus on several research clusters in partnership with renowned scientists from different colleges and centers, to address a diverse set of themes with regards to both basic research and application science.         CESAR will continue to promote public awareness and disseminating research findings on environmental issues. Through research, and an interdisciplinary approach, CESAR is a catalyst for strengthening, promoting, and contributing to environmental science and policy across the University, the country and the region.      

  

The Center for Environmental Studies and Research (CESAR) at the Sultan Qaboos University envisions conducting research, raising awareness on environmental issues locally, regionally and globally, helping various agencies of government and other stakeholders to protect and sustainable management of the nation’s natural resources through planned environmental initiatives and research in the Sultanate of Oman. CESAR would strive to become an internationally recognized Center of excellence for environmental research in the region.

1- To encourage, organize and coordinate environmental studies and research at Sultan Qaboos University.

2- To coordinate with government, international agencies and private sector to collate and disseminate information on environmental research relating to Oman and the region.

3- To serve as a liaison promoting research collaboration and interaction between University, Government, International Agencies and the Private Sector.

4- To contribute to the evaluation of environmental policies issues and assist Government Agencies when requested.

2- Promote interdisciplinary environmental research at the University using available expertise and other resources.

3- Seek and administer internal/external funding for environmental research and programs organized by/at the University. Organize seminars, symposia and conferences on environmental issues with the assistance of local, regional and international sponsors.

4- Facilitate interactions between government ministries, international agencies and the private sector to carry out environmental research in the Sultanate.

5- Publish digests, directories, conference proceedings and special issues of existing University Journals to disseminate research results.

6- Create awareness of environmental issues among school and University students and public using mass media and by organizing special activities.

7- Facilitate consultancy projects by linking up SQU researchers with researchers in other sectors.

8- Support of postdoctoral fellows and visiting scholars to conduct environmental research in Oman.

CESAR has carved a niche for itself in certain areas of research and expertise and work at the CESAR has been aimed at influencing policy and strengthening the institutional support required for better management of natural resources. In addition to carrying out research projects that are local, national, and international in scale, the center actively contributes to local thinking and provides intellectual input on sustainable development issues through representation in government committees, and participation in seminars on local issues, training programmes, and workshops.

More specifically CESAR activities are:

The CESAR works in collaboration with other Colleges and Centers within Sultan Qaboos University. CESAR has developed close relationships with the government departments at various level. Additionally, through interaction and working in partnership with other organizations, be they industry groups or other research/academic organizations, researchers at the CESAR keep abreast with local and global developments in their respective fields.
