Introduction
The Remote Sensing and GIS Center (SQURSGIS) - Sultan Qaboos University, and the Federation of the Universities of the Islamic World (FUIW), and the ICESCO, and in collaboration with the ICESCO Chair of Machine Learning in Remote Sensing and the IEEE-Geoscience and Remote Sensing International Society (IEEE-GRSS, Oman) and Oman National Commission for Education, Culture and Science are organizing « My Thesis in 1000 Words » International contest that aims to encourage PhD students to hone their communication skills and sharpen their ability to present their doctoral thesis in 1000 words.
Details:
The competition involves recording video clip in which the candidate explains his/her doctoral thesis in no more than a thousand word. A jury of specialized experts and academics will evaluate phase. Five of them for theme 1 and five for theme 2, where:
Theme 1: All disciplines, except the one specified in the theme 2.
Theme 2: The topic of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Remote Sensing and Geographical Information Systems (GIS).
The nominees will be invited to the Sultan Qaboos University in the Sultanate to physically deliver their Presentations, during a final ceremony on 17 December 2024, in the presence of research's/professors, university presidents, deans, and directors of university institution.
For each theme, the jury selects the first and second-place winners, while the attendees vote for the audience award winners.

Selection Criteria:
- The Thesis covers one of the following themes:
- Theme 1: All disciplines, except the one specified in the theme 2.
- Theme 2: The topic of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Remote Sensing and Geographical Information Systems (GIS).
- Students enrolled in PhD and who did not defend their PhD thesis.
- Students who won in the first edition are not eligible to participate.
- Students who have already defended their doctoral thesis are not eligible to participate.
Application requirement:
The application file should be received before 15th September 2024 and should include a video with:
- A comprehension and content: the explanation of the thesis in a language accessible to the non-specialist audience.
- Interactivity and communication: clear language communication and body language.
Technical specification of the video:
- The video should be titled with the candidate’s full name and university.
- The resolution of the video must be a minimum of 1080 pixels.
- The video format must be in MP4.
- The duration of the video must be between 3 and a maximum of 5 minutes.
- The video must be filmed in landscape mode, not portrait, to ensure it can be viewed correctly on different devices.
- The file size must not exceed 500 MB.
N.B: It is crucial to note that during the recording, the presentation should take place in a neutral setting (classroom, library, or the like), avoiding any backlight behind the candidate and ensuring a quiet and noise-free environment, maintaining unobstructed view of the face and distinct voice. the application will be canceled if the videos are sent in duplicate.
- Attach the presentation script in a word document not exceeding 1000 words to the registration form. the word document should be titled with candidate’s full name and university.
- The female candidacies are deeply encouraged.
- Languages accepted: French, English and Arabic.
