The Department of Chemistry invites applications from outstanding individuals for two faculty positions in the fields of Analytical/ Bioorganic Chemistry and Physical Chemistry at the rank of Assistant/Associate Professor.

Analytical Chemistry Position (NEW)

We seek a creative analytical chemist who will undertake an outstanding program of research leading to peer-reviewed scholarly publications and extramural funding for that research. Applicants will be expected to teach, advise, and mentor graduate and undergraduate students. Particular fields of interest are analytical, separation science and bioanalytical chemistry, but exceptional candidates from any area of analytical chemistry will be considered. A Ph.D. in analytical chemistry and at least one year of postdoctoral experience are required. The ability to teach general chemistry courses will be an added advantage. Our department has an active M.Sc and Ph.D. program and research faculty engaged in a range of interdisciplinary activities.

The successful candidates are expected to carry out original research in a collaborative and interdisciplinary environment of the Chemistry Department and College of Science, engage in high-quality teaching and mentor students at both undergraduate and graduate levels.    

For all positions, the successful; candidates are expected to establish a vigorous externally funded independent research program in their areas of expertise involving student research projects at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels.  A minimum of one-year postdoctoral research experience and a minimum of two-year teaching experience beyond postdoctoral training are required.  The ability to teach general chemistry will be an added advantage.

Bioorganic Chemistry: Suitably qualified candidates are expected to have a PhD degree in Organic Chemistry or Bioorganic Chemistry with experience in organic synthesis and active research interest preferably in the areas of enzyme-activity and inhibitory activities as well as enzyme stereochemistry and mechanism. Preference will be given to candidates who have experience with NMR spectroscopic techniques and applications involving structure-function studies of biomolecules such as proteins, carbohydrates and lipids. Candidates who will be able to take full advantage of the NMR facilities available in the College of Science are particularly encouraged to apply for this position.

Physical Chemistry: We seek an individual who holds a PhD degree in Physical Chemistry with a firm grasp of the fundamentals of this discipline. Preference will be given to candidates with a proven track record of research in an area of surfactant science, in particular surfactant-based processes in the petroleum industry. Teaching duties will include delivery and development of courses in physical chemistry and colloidal chemistry at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
